816 Davis, Richard Harding & John T. McCutcheon The Deserter
Charles Scribner's Sons 1917 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Good dust jacket
Dust in brodart cover. When Mr. Davis wrote the story of The Deserter, he could not possibly have foreseen that it was to be his last story the last of those short stories which gave him such eminence as a short-story writer. He apparently was as rugged and as vigorous as ever. And yet, had he sat down to write a story which he knew was to be his last, I do not think he could have written one more fittingly designed to be the capstone of his literary monument. The theme is one in which he has imconsciouidy mirrored his own ideals of honorable obligation, as well as one which presents a wholesome lesson to young soldiers who have taken an oath to do faithful service to a nation.Davis, an American author of romantic novels and short stories, was also the best known reporter of his generation. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. ; 7.30 X 4.80 X 0.40 inches; 43 pages

871 Diaz-Plaja, Fernando & John Inderwick Palmer The Spaniard and the Seven Deadly Sins
Charles Scribner's Sons 1967 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Book looks never read. Dust has minor freying to corners. Most people think of the Spaniard as a romantic, flamboyant figure steeped in legend, shouting "Ole!" as the matador faces his moment of truth. However true, this picture has about as much reality as a travel poster. What is today's Spaniard really like - and who understands his astonishing character and temperament. Fernando Diaz-Plaja does, and he has given us a witty, unsparing, eminently quotable portrait of his countrymen.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 223 pages; Using the Seven Deadly Sins as touchstones, the author takes a remarkably candid look as each of these sins as practiced with barely concealed enthusiasm by his Spanish countrymen.

880 Dixon, Jeane & Rene Noorbergen Jeane Dixon My Life and Prophecies
William Morrow 1969 0688021425 First Edition; Various Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket Signed by Author
White and blue cover, no dust or slipcase. Signed, "Blessings, Jean Dixon". Book is in Excellent Condition. Jean Dixon was one of the best-known American astrologers and psychics of the 20th century, due to her syndicated newspaper astrology column, and some well-publicized predictions and a best-selling biography. She is best known for allegedly predicting the assassination of President John F. Kennedy four years before he was elected. In the May 13, 1956, issue of Parade Magazine she wrote that the 1960 presidential election would be "dominated by labor and won by a Democrat" who would then go on to "be assassinated or die in office though not necessarily in his first term." Five years later Jeane Dixon was addressing a meeting in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles when questioned if Robert Kennedy would ever become President. 'No,' she had answered. 'He will never become President of the United States because of a tragedy right here in this hotel.' A week later Robert Kennedy did win the California Democratic primary and he had just finished addressing a victory rally at the Ambassador Hotel's ballroom when he was shot. He died the following day. Also in January 1942 Dixon had warned the Hollywood film actress Carole Lombard (married to Clark Gable at the time) that it would be dangerous for her to travel by plane within the next six weeks. Lombard, scheduled to appear at a War Bond rally did not heed Dixon's warning, she died in an airplane crash within three days of the warning. President Richard Nixon referred to Jean Dixon as "the soothsayer" and ordered preparations for a terrorist attack that Dixon had predicted, of course the prediction did not come true during Nixon's term. She was also one of several astrologers who gave advice to Nancy Reagan during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. She died of cardiac arrest in Washington, D.C. on January 25, 1997, at the age of 93. English professor Karen Pelletier is well known for her provocative manner and iconoclastic opinions, so it's no surprise that, when asked to name the Greatest Book of the Twentieth Century, she perversely cites a commercial blockbuster from the 1950s. 888 Doddridge, Philip The life of the Hon. Col. J. Gardiner, Who was slain at the battle of Preston Pans, September 21, 1745. With an appendix relating to the ancient family of the Monroes, of Fowlis
Leeds Davies 1815 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Written by the author to David Gardner, Esq. who was a cornet in Sir John Cope's regiment of Dragoons and the son of the late Col. Gardnier. This battle is not a battle honour for British Regiments. The regiments present at the battle were: Gardiner’s (13th) and Hamilton’s (14th) Dragoons, Guise’s (6th), Lee’s (44th), Murray’s (46th) and Lascelles (47th) Foot. The Col was killed at Prestonpans southeast of Edinburg in Scotland during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. The Royal Army took a horrific beating by the Scottish. Much of this account speaks of Gardners family history and his conversion to Christianity. Account has been rebound in beautiful marble cover with gold and black label. Original text with uneven cut pages and yellowing due to age. Also contains an Elegy on the death of Col. Gardiner by Rev. Mr. Thomas Gibbons. Pags 139-141 have the top right corner torn out with a very small amount of text missing, otherwise complete. Rare. ; 161 pages
