3902 Whitney, George Some account of the early history and present state of the town of Quincy, in the commonwealth of Massachusetts
Christian Register Office...S.B. Manning, Printer 1827 First Edition; Various Paperback Fair with no dust jacket
This is a very worn copy with many chips around outside of pages. Covers have been re-stapled. None of the text on pages are affected by the ragged edges of pages. There is the signature "Horatio Alger, Chelsea" on cover AND on title page at top. It is suspected that this is the signature of the father of Horatio Alger, Jr.. Horatio Sr. was a Univeralist preacher and lived in Chelsea (where he also served part-time as the postmaster, farmer, and grammar school teacher) where Jr. was born in 1832. Sr. had financial troubles and in 1844 he moved from Chelsea to Marlborough, Massachusetts for a higher paying position. In 1845 he was installed as pastor of the Second Congregational Society. Horatio Jr. attended Gates Academy and entered Harvard at the age of 16. He went on to become one of the most prolific 19th century American authors. Horatio Jr. followed in his fathers footsteps and became a Unitarian minister in addition to writer. The publication date of this imprint corresponds to Horatio Jr's birth and childhood and the publisher The Christian Register (1821–1957) was the leading American Unitarian weekly, published by the American Unitarian Association further confirming association of both Horatio Sr. and Jr. to the publisher. A nice provenance to the imprint. Booklet now in archival sleeve to protect condition. Rare if not unique imprint. 3929 Williamson, Gideon Brooks Roy T. Williams Servant of God
Kansas City, MO Nazarene Publishing House, Kansas City, MO 1947 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket Signed by Author
Blue cover gold lettering. Dust Jacket has minor chips in bottom edge and now in Mylar Protective Cover. Signed by author. Roy Williams was born in Milam, Texas on February 14, 1883. His family moved to Many, Louisiana when he was five years old. Williams was not exposed to religion during his childhood; however, at the age of 16 he attended a revival at a Methodist church. It was then that he began practicing Methodism, and although he was originally ridiculed by his family for his decision, they eventually converted to Methodism themselves. In 1908, Williams attended a General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene with his wife Eunice Harvey Williams and was ordained a minister.Among the first graduates at Texas Holiness University, Williams became the president of the university in 1911 at the age of 28. As president, he changed the name to Peniel University, and it was renamed Peniel College by a later president. Williams resigned in 1913 to become an evangelist, which he continued until 1916 when he was named the General Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene after the deaths of the two current superintendents. At 33 years old, he was the youngest person to hold that position, and a later General Assembly set the age limit to 35. He served from 1916 until the end of his life in 1946, the longest time that anyone had ever served.Williams was to give a speech in Columbus, Georgia on October 21, 1945; however, he woke up that morning feeling ill and unable to talk, so the pastor of the church took him to the hospital. When he was fit to travel again, he was taken to his cabin in Missouri. He died on March 25, 1946, days after his arrival at his cabin. The library on the campus of Southern Nazarene University is named after him. About the Author: Gideon Brooks Williamson (1898-1981) was a minister, president of Eastern Nazarene College (1936-1944), general president of the Nazarene Young People's Society (1932-1940), and general superintendent in the Church of the Nazarene (1946-1968).[edit] BiographyWilliamson was born November 26, 1898 in New Florence, Missouri, converted and called to preach at an early age in the Church of God (Holiness), and joined the Church of the Nazarene in 1919 when he graduated from John Fletcher College at University Park, Iowa.[1] He pursued further studies at McCormick and Northern Baptist Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. He pastored for 16 years, at the Austin Church in Chicago, the Cleveland First Church of the Nazarene in Ohio, and, after he left the presidency at Eastern Nazarene in Massachusetts, the First Church of the Nazarene in Kansas City, Missouri. Wilson returned to New York where he met Booth Tarkington in 1904, and Tarkington and Wilson traveled together to Europe in 1905. The two completed the play The Man from Home in 1906 in Paris. 3944 Wilstach, Paul Tidewater Virginia
Indianapolis, IN Bobbs-Merrill Company 1929 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Brown cover gold print. Hinges a bit shaken. Yellowing to some pages from age. Former owners name written inside front cover. Also signed in the front is "Helen M. Bailey, American Embassy, Mexico City". Helen Miller Bailey, PhD, taught at East Los Angeles College for more than forty years. She used a series of travel films for instructional purposes in the classroom as well as in travel lectures for the general public. Bailey spent eleven summers in Mexico, Central America, and South America between 1933 and 1954, and wrote several books about Latin American history and society. The term tidewater may be correctly applied to all portions of any area, including Virginia, where the water level is affected by the tides (more specifically, where the water level rises when the tide comes in). In the case of Virginia, the Tidewater region includes the land east of the Fall Line, the natural border with the Piedmont Region. 3954 Witt, Linda & Judith Bellafaire & Britta Granrud & Mary Jo Binker "A Defense Weapon Known to Be of Value" Servicewomen of the Korean War Era
Hanover, N. H. UPNE 2005 1584654716 First Edition; Various Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Dark green cover, no dust. Book is new, just no dust jacket. Extensively researched, this book provides compelling insight from a feminist viewpoint that addresses discriminatory legislation and regulations that prevented women from realizing their fullest potential and integration into the military. The individual stories woven into the text add interest and complement the historical content. The chapter on the nurses is particularly powerful. Their service of caring, courage and dedication under the most hazardous and austere conditions are the hallmarks of the noble profession of military nurse." (Brig. Gen. Connie L. Slewitzke, U.S. Army, Retired ) ; 1.1 x 9 x 6.2 Inches; 336 pages; Fewer than five years after World War II, the United States found itself once again confronted by a war for which it was unprepared. Once again a downsized military establishment rushed to call up, draft, and recruit the needed manpower. And once again when it came up short, the services asked American women to leave their homes, jobs, and families to serve their country.

This book chronicles the crucial work of servicewomen in the Korean War, and other uniformed women who helped support that war and the burgeoning Cold War in places as far flung as the Pacific atoll of Kwajalein, bases in still-occupied post-war Germany and Japan, and lonely, isolated outposts such as Great Falls, Montana. The few short years between 1945 and 1953 saw pivotal changes in women's status in the U.S. Armed Forces. In a series of controversial and sometimes bitter legislative contests, women went from being almost a historical footnote in the immediate postwar period--a source of labor and skills the nation's military took for granted--to winning a permanent place in each branch of the armed services.

Largely based on the rich archives housed at the Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation, this volume records the actions of women who served in the armed forces, as well as those in the Red Cross, the USO, and other nongovernmental organizations that sent women overseas in support of U.S. military personnel. Topics include the efforts of the Department of Defense to increase the number of female recruits for the Korean War and the difficulty of retaining them in an era that valued homemakers and devalued career women; the cost to the military of the female talent drain just when the military needed them most; and a close look at Army, Navy and Air Force nurses, as well as those in the innovative M.A.S.H. units, who all performed magnificently under dangerous and harsh conditions.

The book's conclusion assesses the failure of the military to fully incorporate women during these years as a result of its own paternalistic mindset (shared by society at large) coupled with the failure of wartime recruiting efforts and the low retention rate for servicewomen. The authors argue that the number of servicewomen remained far below authorized levels throughout this period, and the continued small size of the women's components resulted in their inability to accomplish their mission. According to the authors, this hurt the credibility of the women's services and haunted them for years, reinforcing the rock-solid belief of many that the military was for men, and women did not belong there.

3962 Wollaston, William The Religion of Nature Delineated
London B. Lintot, W.and J. Innys, J.Osborn, T Longman, J.Batley 1726 Second Edition; Third Printing Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
Original leather on board binding is very worn and hinges cracking, but not seperated. Pages are clean and bright with very little browning due to age. Palmer was the printer and book sold by B. Lintott, W. and J. Innys, J. Osborn, J Batley, and T. Longman. There is a book plate inside front cover that says Chappel Woodhouse and there is an inscription in front from former owner. Woodhouse was Rev. John-Chappel Woodhouse, educated at Christ Church and he wrote and published Annotations on the Apocalypse in 1805. Wollaston (1660-1724) devoted his life to writing treatises on religious questions. The Religion of Nature Delineated upholds the intellectual theory of morality of which Samuel Clarke, Newtons disciple was the chief proponent. It has been documented that Benjamin Franklin set this work up for printing. It is the third edition of Wollaston's work. The first edition of 1722 was small, filled with uncorrected errors and sold without the authors knowledge or consent. In 1724 the printer Palmer reprinted the work with Wollastons corrections. It is said in his Auto-biography Franklin reports that he composed the second edition Lowndes has this from Franklin ? Franklin disagreed with Wollaston and wrote in response to Wollaston A Dissertation on Liberty and Necessity, Pleasure and Pain, which appeared in London in 1725, Scarce if not rare with this ownership history. ; 0 pages; Signed by Notable Personage, Unrelated

New York Arch Cape Press 1989 0517678837 Various Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Excellent condition. Fantastic illustrated plates of lamps and fixtures. Was originally published in 1907 as Electric Fittings by the Manufacture of James Hinks and Son Ltd., Birmingham, England. Wikipedia says of Art Nouveau: "Art Nouveau ([a? nu vo], anglicised /'??t nu?v?u/) is an international movement[2] and style of art, architecture and applied art—especially the decorative arts—that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890–1905).[3] The name 'Art nouveau' is French for 'new art', it is also known as Jugendstil, German for 'youth style', named after the magazine Jugend, which promoted it, and in Italy, Stile Liberty from the department store in London, Liberty & Co., which popularized the style. A reaction to academic art of the 19th century, it is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, as well as highly-stylized, flowing curvilinear forms.[4] Art Nouveau is an approach to design according to which artists should work on everything from architecture to furniture, making art part of everyday life.[5]Art Nouveau's fifteen-year peak was most strongly felt throughout Europe—from Glasgow to Moscow to Spain—but its influence was global. Hence, it is known in various guises with frequent localized tendencies.[6] In France, Hector Guimard's metro entrances shaped the landscape of Paris and Emile Gallé was at the center of the school of thought in Nancy. Victor Horta had a decisive impact on architecture in Belgium.[7] Magazines like Jugend helped spread the style in Germany, especially as a graphic artform, while the Vienna Secessionists influenced art and architecture throughout Austria-Hungary. Art Nouveau was also a movement of distinct individuals such as Gustav Klimt, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Alfons Mucha, René Lalique, Antoni Gaudí and Louis Comfort Tiffany, each of whom interpreted it in their own individual manner.[8][9]Although Art Nouveau fell out of favor with the arrival of 20th-century modernist styles,[10] it is seen today as an important bridge between the historicism of Neoclassicism and modernism.[9] Furthermore, Art Nouveau monuments are now recognized by UNESCO on their World Heritage List as significant contributions to cultural heritage.[11] The historic center of Riga, Latvia, with "the finest collection of art nouveau buildings in Europe", was inscribed on the list in 1997 in part because of the "quality and the quantity of its Art Nouveau/Jugendstil architecture",[12] and four Brussels town houses by Victor Horta were included in 2000 as "works of human creative genius" that are "outstanding examples of Art Nouveau architecture brilliantly illustrating the transition from the 19th to the 20th century in art, thought, and society."[1] It later influenced psychedelic art that flourished in the 1960s and 1970s"Dust jacket now in Brodart mylar protective (clear) cover. 3975 Wright, Derrick The Battle for Iwo Jima
Sutton Publishing 1999 0750921676 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Signed by Hershel "Woody" Williams a Medal of Honor winner who served at Iwo Jima. "Once the Marianas fell, the U.S. wasted no time in building five airbases there in order to send the Superfortresses, the B-29s, over the Japanese home islands to bomb factories and large cities. On Iwo Jima, the Japanese maintained an airbase and a radar system. Situated half way between the Marianas and Japan, Japanese fighters were sent aloft to harass the B-29s both coming and going on their runs. The radar afforded the enemy a two-hour advance warning of the bombing raids. Iwo was taken to put an end to this and to provide a refuge for our damaged bombers on the return run. "Corporal Williams daringly went forward alone to attempt the reduction of devastating machine-gun fire from the unyielding positions... and repeatedly returned.....to wipe out one position after another." From signed card that is laid in book along with a Medal of Honor Foundation card. Williams signed book on endpaper. Very rare copy. 2001 reprint. Over 80 historical b&w photos, many previously unpublished, drawings of the principal tanks and aircraft, and paintings by the former official artist to the U.S. Marine Corps. ; Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 216 pages; Signed by Notable Personage, Related
