Henry Holt and Company 2001 1567317979 First Edition; Second Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Book and dust jacket look new. Dust in protective mylar cover. Signed by Ensign Harlan Twible one of the survivors. "On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia." The definitive account of a little-known chapter in World War II history, In Harm's Way is destined to become a classic tale of war, survival, and extraordinary courage.(Review) In July 1945, Ensign Twible served as a gunnery officer on the USS Indianapolis. The ship had just delivered the atomic bomb and was sailing home when it was attacked by a Japanese submarine. Twible recounted "We were under secret orders, so nobody knew we were hit," "The bow was blown off the ship....Here I was, an Ensign, and I had to give the order to abandon ship," Rare work. ; Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 333 pages; Signed by Notable Personage, Related

3420 Staples, Charles Richard The history of pioneer Lexington 1779-1806,
Lexington KY Transylvania press 1939 Later; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Red cloth cover. Reprint of the 1939 edition by Staples. A record of Lexington during it's formative years.Lexington, consolidated with Fayette County and often denoted as Lexington-Fayette, is the second-largest city in Kentucky and the 60th-largest city in the United States. By land area, Lexington is the 28th largest city in the United States. Known as the "Horse Capital of the World," it is the heart of the state's Bluegrass region. With a mayor-alderman form of government, it is one of two cities in Kentucky designated by the state as first-class; the other is the state's largest city of Louisville. Lexington was founded by European Americans in June 1775, in what was then considered Fincastle County, Virginia, 17 years before Kentucky became a state. A party of frontiersmen, led by William McConnell, camped on the Middle Fork of Elkhorn Creek (now known as Town Branch and rerouted under Vine Street) at the site of the present-day McConnell Springs. Upon hearing of the colonists' victory in the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, they named their campsite Lexington. It was the first of many American places to be named after the Massachusetts town.[5] The risk of Native American attacks delayed permanent settlement for four years. ; Kentucky; 361 pages;

3446 Stevens, Brooke The Circus of the Earth and the Air
New York Harcourt 1994 0151179875 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Book looks new. Dust in Mylar. A woman steps into a circus magician's box, and the box is set on fire. When the woman fails to reappear and the circus itself vanishes overnight, Alex Barton sets out to find his missing wife. Bizarre clues lead him to a mysterious island, where he encounters a faceless private army, a theater where performance and the stage have become objects of veneration, and a Fellini-esque circus concealed within a hollowed-out mountain. Tortured, tempted, analyzed, Alex sheds his identity and assumes a new one, as a tightrope walker whose strength is his vulnerability. As the line between the real and the surreal blur, Alex must discover what may--or may not--be the truth about his wife and himself. " circus vanishing act that abruptly terminates a marriage sets the stage for this tale of a lover's quest: a brooding, violent first novel from ex-tiger groom Stevens." (Krikus Review); 9.50 X 6.50 X 1.40 inches; 410 pages

3472 Strickland, Denzil Swimmers in the Sea (Author Signed)
Press 53 2008 0981628028 First Edition; 1st Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket Signed by Author
Inscribed and signed by author on title page. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book. Swimmers in the Sea is a fiercely imagined novel by a newcomer to be watched. Author Denzil Strickland takes calamity and unflinchingly peels back its layers in this thrilling literary debut about a man who travels to pre-Katrina New Orleans to receive an unlikely inheritance from his estranged and dying father, a one-armed portrait artist convicted of manslaughter for the accident that killed his own two children and a newlywed couple leaving their wedding. At the age of thirty, Cliff Ebbets is broke and living in North Carolina, his marriage failing, when he receives a call from a man named Don Willis, his father's live-in companion. Don beckons Cliff to New Orleans for an inheritance he won't specify. Desperate but circumspect about anything to do with his father, Cliff concedes and travels back to the home of his earliest memory. There, he meets his father's friends, men from the underbelly of New Orleans' Ninth Ward, who paint a picture of Cecil Ebbets that Cliff doesn't recognize. It's the same picture he's being shown by the ghost of his dead sister Rachel. The twist in this tale of love and betrayal comes at the outset and wrings back and forth on itself throughout its telling. Swimmers in the Sea is a story about the other family and the son who inherits the sins of his father. It's the story of how the story of your life can change. Just like that. ; 1.2 x 8.6 x 6.2 Inches; 316 pages; Signed by Author

3488 Sulzberger, C.L. The Last of the Giants .
New York Macmillan 1971 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
First Printing stated. Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (French: [?a?l d? gol] (About this sound listen); 22 November 1890 – 9 November 1970) was a French general and statesman who led the French Resistance against Nazi Germany in World War II and chaired the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946 in order to reestablish democracy in France. In 1958, he came out of retirement when appointed Prime Minister of France by President René Coty. He was asked to rewrite the Constitution of France and founded the Fifth Republic after approval by referendum. He was elected President of France later that year, a position he was reelected to in 1965 and held until his resignation in 1969. He was the dominant figure of France during the Cold War era, and his memory continues to influence French politics. Born in Lille, he graduated from Saint-Cyr in 1912. He was a decorated officer of the First World War, wounded several times, and later taken prisoner at Verdun. During the interwar period, he advocated mobile armoured divisions. During the German invasion of May 1940, he led an armoured division which counterattacked the invaders; he was then appointed Undersecretary for War. Refusing to accept his government's armistice with Germany, De Gaulle exhorted the French population to resist occupation and to continue the fight in his Appeal of 18 June. He led a government in exile and the Free French Forces against the Axis. (wiki) ; De Gaulle; Photographs
