3123 Robinson, Bud Nuggets of Gold
Louisville, KY Pentecostal Publishing Co. c1930 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
No publication date, but circa 1920's. Red cover with gold print. Cover worn and has discoloration on back. Clean contents. Reuben "Uncle Bud" Robinson 1860-1942 Uncle Bud Robinson was born in a log cabin in the primitive mountain region of Tennessee. When he was 16, his father died, and his mother sold what little they had and moved to Texas. After an unsuccessful endeavor as a sharecropper, Bud hired out as a ranch hand. In August of 1880, during a camp meeting, he felt deep conviction for his sin and received Christ as his Saviour and was gloriously saved. That same night, while lying under the wagon with his hat on a mesquite stump for a pillow, the Lord called him to preach. Although he had no education and stuttered so badly that he could hardly tell his name, yet in the first year of his ministry he saw about 300 conversions in his meetings. On January 10, 1893, he married Miss Sallie Harper at Georgetown, Texas. For two years he served the Hubbard cir- cuit, but the remaining 60 years of his ministry were given to evangelism. While lacking formal education, Uncle Bud had a wisdom all of his own. It was an unusual insight into the purpose for the redeemed man here on earth, a holy walk, day by day. His philosophy is seen in the following prayer he prayed each morning: "O Lord, give me a backbone as big as a sawlog, and ribs like sleepers under the church floor. Put iron shoes on me and galvanized breeches, and hang a wagon- load of determination in the gable end of my soul. And help me to sign the contract to fight the devil as long as I have a vision, and bit him as long as I have a tooth, and then gum him till I die! Amen!" During his long ministry, it is estimated that Uncle Bud traveled over 2,000,000 miles, preached over 33,000 ser- mons, witnessed more than 100,000 conversions, personally gave more than $85,000.00 in helping young people with their Christian education, secured over 53,000 subscriptions to his church paper, The Herald of Holiness, and wrote 14 books and sold more than 500,000 copies. In spite of his handicaps and physical ailments, speech impediment and lack of education, he made the Who's Who of California. From Boston to Los Angeles, thousands thronged to hear him, charmed by his homespun wit and his unique presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His life was one of activity, and his will to his dying hour was to serve his Lord. He went to be with the Lord on November 2, 1942. Book now in archival sleeve to protect condition.Very rare book.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 122 pages

The Chaco War (1932–1935) was fought between Bolivia and Paraguay over control of a great part of the Gran Chaco region of South America, which was incorrectly thought to be rich in oil.The Chaco War (1932–1935) was fought between Bolivia and Paraguay over control of a great part of the Gran Chaco region of South America, which was incorrectly thought to be rich in oil. Though the region was sparsely populated, control of the Paraguay River running through it would have given one of the two landlocked countries access to the Atlantic Ocean. This was especially important to Bolivia, which had lost its Pacific Ocean coast to Chile in the War of the Pacific (1883). In international arbitration, Bolivia argued that the region had been part of the original Spanish colonial province of Moxos and Chiquitos to which Bolivia was heir. Meanwhile, Paraguay had begun to colonize the region. Indeed, both Paraguayan and Argentinian planters already bred cattle and exploited quebracho woods in the area, while the small indigenous population of Guaraní-speaking tribes was related to that country's own Guaraní heritage.Paraguay had lost almost half of its territory to Brazil and Argentina in the War of the Triple Alliance and was not prepared to see what it perceived as its last chance for a viable economy fall victim to Bolivia.[1] By the time a ceasefire was negotiated on June 10, 1935, Paraguay controlled most of the region. This was recognised in a 1938 truce, signed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, by which Paraguay was awarded three-quarters of the Chaco Boreal. Bolivia did get the remaining territory, that bordered the Paraguay's River Puerto Busch. Some years later it was found that there were no oil resources in the Chaco Boreal kept by Paraguay, yet the territories kept by Bolivia were, in fact, rich in natural gas and petroleum, these being at the present time, the country's largest exports and source of wealth.General Raimundo Rolón Villasanti (1903–1981) was briefly President of Paraguay from January 30, 1949 to February 27, 1949.Many Bolivians felt embarrassed by their country's stunning military blunder during the Chaco War, which led to a mass movement away from the traditional order known as the Generación del Chaco[vague], which was epitomised by the MNR-led Revolution of 1952.; 1; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall

Naval Institute Press 1990 1557507252 First American Edition; Various Hardcover Very Good in Good dust jacket
Dust has been neatly glued by former owner to prevent loss otherwise fine. The "lendlease" former USS Buchanan (DD13) was renamed HMS Campletown and soom became a casualty of war on 28 March 1942 in Nazairre, France. Her story is fascinating as she became an example of a wrong made right by the relenting of Roosevelt to the pressure of those who pushed for the U.S. to help her friend fight the agression of Hitler. Roosevelt did not want to agitate Hitler. Think of what would have happened had he not relented and allowed the U.S. to enter into WW II. 3166 Royster, Charles The Fabulous History of the Dismal Swamp Company A Story of George Washington's Times
Knopf 1999 0679433457 First Edition; Various Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Maroon cover with gold lettering. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. In this absorbing narrative Charles Royster traces the rise and fall of the eighteenth-century transatlantic culture that was built on the insatiable demand in Europe for Virginia tobacco and the equally insatiable American demand for European manufactured goods.

Moving from the plantations of Virginia and Antigua to the warehouses of London and Glasgow, from the Gold Coast of Africa to the valleys of the Allegheny Mountains, from the iron furnaces of southern Wales to the subscribers' room of Lloyd's of London, Professor Royster gives us the story of the Dismal Swamp Company, a fantastically delusional enterprise that proposed draining and developing a vast morass along the Virginia-North Carolina border. Examining the interconnected lives of the company's partners, Royster reveals a colonial order built on a system of cronyism, conspicuous consumption, and debt that seems hauntingly familiar. He writes about the many schemers and dreamers (including George Washington, Robert "King" Carter, two William Byrds, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and Robert Morris) who failed to amass their desired fortunes, and a few realists (Samuel Gist, Dr. Thomas Walker, and Anthony Bacon) who succeeded, but at the dire expense of others. And we see the breakdown of this culture and the transition to a more democratic, though similar, system after the Revolution.

Throughout Royster's narrative we seepossessors possessed by their possessions, slaveholders possessed by slavery, and heirs possessed by litigation. Connecting all their stories are their unceasing efforts to make something substantial out of the insubstantial--chief among them the almost unbelievable delusion that fortunes could be made from the Dismal Swamp.; 2.1 x 9.7 x 6.7 Inches; 640 pages

3172 Ruse, Michael The Evolution-Creation Struggle
Harvard University Press 2005 0674016874 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Looks new. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover.Creation versus evolution: What seems like a cultural crisis of our day, played out in courtrooms and classrooms across the county, is in fact part of a larger story reaching back through the centuries. The views of both evolutionists and creationists originated as inventions of the Enlightenment--two opposed but closely related responses to a loss of religious faith in the Western world.

In his latest book, Michael Ruse, a preeminent authority on Darwinian evolutionary thought and a leading participant in the ongoing debate, uncovers surprising similarities between evolutionist and creationist thinking. Exploring the underlying philosophical commitments of evolutionists, he reveals that those most hostile to religion are just as evangelical as their fundamentalist opponents. But more crucially, and reaching beyond the biblical issues at stake, he demonstrates that these two diametrically opposed ideologies have, since the Enlightenment, engaged in a struggle for the privilege of defining human origins, moral values, and the nature of reality.

Highlighting modern-day partisans as divergent as Richard Dawkins and Left Behind authors Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, Ruse's bracing book takes on the assumptions of controversialists of every stripe and belief and offers to all a new and productive way of understanding this unifying, if often bitter, quest. ; 1.2 x 8.4 x 5.8 Inches; 336 pages

3187 Sallis, James Death Will Have Your Eyes A Novel about Spies
New York St. Martin's Press 1997 0312155131 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book.Sallis' Lew Griffin mysteries, although not widely known, are revered by many for their combination of New Orleans atmosphere and existential toughness. Both those qualities are present in this intriguing but overly introspective spy novel. David is a former CIA hit man, trained as part of an elite corps during the height of the cold war. Long retired from the agency and slowly constructing a human identity for himself, he is abruptly called back into action to track a former cohort turned rogue. What transpires is an elaborate cat-and-mouse car chase, moving to and fro across the American landscape and concluding in New Orleans. The real action, though, is internal, as David drives and broods, contemplating the spy's cypherlike lot. Much of this material is interesting enough, but the delicate balance between story, character, and idea is never quite right, leaving the reader impressed by the ingredients but slightly disappointed in the dish itself. Still, any Sallis novel belongs in all but the smallest mystery collections. Bill Ott, Book review Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover.; 8.30 X 5.70 X 0.80 inches; 256 pages

3198 Santelli, James. Brief History of the 8th Marines.
GPO, 1976. 1976 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
Original 1976 printing. The 8th Marine Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Marine Corps. They are based at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and fall under the command of the 2nd Marine Division and the II Marine Expeditionary Force. The 8th Marine Regiment was formed on 9 October 1917, at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia during the buildup for World War I. While training for war, the command was transferred to Fort Crockett, Texas, to guard the nearby Mexican oil fields. The regiment was joined there by the 9th Marines to form the 3d Marine Brigade; the first Advance Base Force of World War I. As such, the Marines were held in reserve to establish and defend naval bases in the Atlantic Ocean or the West Indies, if required. The 8th Marines was inactivated at Philadelphia Navy Yard on 25 April 1919.A year later, the regiment was reactivated for service in Haiti where Marines had been fighting the Cacos bandits since 1914. Through systematic patrolling which culminated in a number of brief, sharp clashes, the 8th Marines eliminated Haitian banditry that had lasted more than a hundred years. The 8th Marines was inactivated again in 1925.
