Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover.16-page b/w photo section 5 maps 6 x 9 "Confederate Corsair: The Life of Lt. Charles W. "Savez" Read is must reading for anyone savoring naval warfare and tales of derring-do. Read has long merited a biography, and Robert A. Jones has met and mastered the challenge in an exemplary manner that readers will applaud." -Edwin C. Bearss Historian Emeritus, National Park Service Lieutenant Charles W. "Savez" Read's life was one of swashbuckling adventure and dazzling escapes. Yet very little has been known about him until recently. Robert A. Jones has tracked down all available sources on this Confederate privateer-including unpublished material from Read's grandchildren-and written an exciting biography that reveals the impact of naval power on the Civil War. For example, while the North's navy projected its force at will, the South chose hit-and-run tactics that slowly bled the North's resources, as many of Read's exploits will show. Robert A. Jones holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering and has been employed by the Department of the Navy for 33 years. He provided historical background research for a 1970 proposal to the Smithsonian Institution for the salvage of the USS Tecumseh and recently published an article on the salvage of the CSS Virginia.; 0.98 x 9.26 x 6.2 Inches; 226 pages

Jefferson and Monticello The Biography of a Builder, Mclaughlin, Jack

Henry Holt and Co. 1988 0805004823 / 9780805004823 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket Signed by Author
Author inscribed and signed bookplate. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book. This book, a National Book Award nominee in 1988, is the life of Thomas Jefferson as seen through the prism of his love affair with Monticello. For over half a century, it was his consuming passion, his most serious amusement. With a sure command of sources and skilled intuitive understanding of Jefferson, McLaughlin crafts and uncommon portrait of builder and building alike. En route he tells us much about life in Virginia; about Monticello’s craftsmen and how they worked their materials; about slavery, class, and family; and, above all, about the multiplicity of domestic concerns that preoccupied this complex man. It is and engaging and incisive look at the eighteenth-century mind: systematic, rational, and curious, but also playful, comfort-loving, and amusing. Ultimately, it provides readers with great insight into daily life in Colonial and Federal America. ; 1.3 x 8.8 x 6.1 Inches; 289 pages; Signed by Author

The study is divided into parts by "turning points" in local life-1727m 1820, 1888, and 1945. (from cover flap) After almost 90 years, 25 books, numerous articles and millions of words, Columbia historian John Hammond Moore sums up any advice he might have for others this way:“Keep going.”For decades, this historian/journalist/scholar has done just that: Kept traveling. Researching. Interviewing. Editing. Teaching. Writing. He’s delved into a gazillion topics from Confederate food to German prisoners of war in America during World War II, to lynchings in South Carolina to a pre-Hollywood biography of 1940s era movie star Errol Flynn. “John is so thorough, so careful in his writing – he’s made major contributions to our understanding of South Carolina history,” says Allen Stokes, who for 25 years was director of the University of South Carolina’s Caroliniana Library, the state’s major university history repository.; ; Signed by Author
