Red cover with gilt print. Numerous surname references. A history of the church which is located in Culpeper, Va. Gift inscription in front. Little Fork Church, St. Mark's Parish, is Culpeper County's only Colonial church. It was ordered into existence in 1731 as a "chapel of ease" within the Little Fork between the Rappahannock and Hazel Rivers by Governor Spotswood. Services at Little Fork ceased at the onset of the Civil War. Early in the war, the church grounds were used as a drill field by the "Little Fork Rangers", more correctly known as Co. D 4th Virginia Cavalry. Later, Union troops quartered at the church destroyed most of the interior furnishings for firewood in the cold winter of 1863, leaving only the shell of the building and the reredos on the east wall. Cyrus Townsend Brady, Rector" on end paper. Cyrus Townsend Brady (December 20, 1861 January 24, 1920) was a journalist, historian and adventure writer. His best-known work is Indian Fights and Fighters. He was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1883. In 1889, he was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal church, and was ordained a priest in 1890. His first wife was Clarissa Guthrie, who died in 1890. His second wife was Mary Barrett. Brady's first major book, For Love of Country, whilst telling the story of a fictitious John Seymour, was actually based in part on the true heroics of Nicholas Biddle, one of the first five captains of the fledgling Continental Navy. Henry Irving Brock (1876-1961) was the son of Henry Clay Brock a professor at the Hampden-Sidney College (the College). Henry Irving Brock was a tutor at the College 1895-1896 and later an associate editior of the New York Times Saturday Magazine. Hamilton James Eckenrode (30 April 187927 September 1952), who wrote the Introduction to Colonial Churches in Virginia, historian and archivist, was born James H. Eckenrode and was the son of Hamilton John Eckenrode and Mary Elizabeth Myer Eckenrode, of Fredericksburg. He graduated from Fredericksburg College in 1898, and spent one year at the University of Virginia taking courses in chemistry, English literature, geology, and Greek before entering the Johns Hopkins University. There he received a doctorate in history in 1905 following publication the previous year of his dissertation, The Political History of Virginia during the Reconstruction.
