Complete three volume set. Leather bindings are very worn with cracks in the leather and cracked hinges and chips. Volume 1 cover is detached, but otherwise complete. Gold inlay decorative border to bindings. Corners and edges worn. Books are in fair to good condition otherwise. Contents complete, tight bindings, and marbled endpapers. Some foxing to tissue sheets covering engravings and to pages opposite title page.. Engravings throughout. The Tatler, The Spectator, and The Guardian were products of a "New Age" of journalism in 18th Century England. They were "news-sheets" were circulated in coffee houses of London where men met to share and discuss the news and opinions of the day. They cost two pense to buy but were free to those wo paid the penny admission to enter a coffee house. These houses became known as "Penny Universities". The papers were founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele. Nathan Drake was Born in Yorkshire, and took his M.D. from Edinburgh in 1789 and practiced medicine at Sudbury (1790-92) and Hadleigh, Suffolk (1792-1836). He was a popular essayist and an early advocate of German literature. He is remembered for his vast compendium of information on Elizabethan writers, Shakespeare and His Times (1817). This work includes essays and biographical sketches on those in literature. Rare complete set. Drake's publications included: The speculator [ed. Drake and W. There is no photo or engraving of author in this book as may have been the case in some printings. Introduction by C. L. Fisher, Minister at Sixteenth Street Church, Birmingham, Alabama. Sketch of his life and labors by Alice A. Bowie of the Anniston Normal and Industrial College, Anniston, Alabama. Eason was a graduate of Selma University and the Richmond Theological Seminary in 1890 with the B.D. degree. On graduation he became a professor of Mathematics at Selma (AL) University. In 1891 he was ordained to take charge of the Union Baptist Church, Marion, Ala. Rev. Eason was a very prominent man in Alabama. Very rare if not unique. ; Photocopy Only; 8 1/2 x 11; 120 pages

Agnes Rothery, or Agnes Edwards Rothery, was the pen name of American author Agnes Pratt. Primarily known as a travel writer, she also published novels. Rothery died in 1954 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her papers are at the University of Virginia. Wikipedia Louis H. Ruyl was an American Born (1870) artist famous for his painting of Rockefeller Center, 1939. This book is protected by an archival quality sleeve to maintain present condition. "Even though the text dates from 1918, it is incredible how much of what the author describes (landmarks, beaches, buildings, customs) still exists today. And how many of the concerns of a century ago (over-development, automobile traffic, over-fishing) persist! Tthere is a 1/8 inch x 2 1/2 inch tear at top edge of dust and two very minor chips. Dust Jacket is torn in fold about 3/4s of the way from top but dust now in Mylar Protective Cover.(see photo Black cloth boards have some slight discoloration spots and board corners are slightly dented with very light wear to covers. Has the signature of a former owner Evelyn V. Estes on front endpaper with clean contents having no writing, underlining or highlighting, binding is tight. Some tanning to endpapers. Contents page of Eliot's wartime masterpiece includes four works Burt Norton, East Coker, The Dry Salvages, Litle Gidding together in one book that formerly had been published separately. East Coker is the village in Somerset from which Eliot's ancestors departed for the New World in 1669; Burnt Norton refers to the Gloucestershire manor house erected on the foundation of a house that burned to the ground in the seventeenth century; The Dry Salvages is a group of rocks off Cape Ann, and so harks to the poet's New England roots, and Little Gidding was the manor in Huntingdonshire that was the destination of poets' pilgrimages as the site where Nicholas Ferrar founded an Anglican religious community in the mid-seventeenth century. Dust Jacket is torn in fold about 3/4s of the way but now in Mylar Protective Cover. A very good collector's grade item. It is the last major verse written by Nobel laureate T. S.
