The Rise of the Dutch Republic, A History Complete in two volumes, Motley, John Lothrop
141 Motley, John Lothrop The Rise of the Dutch Republic, A History Complete in two volumes
New York A. L. Burt 1856 First Edition (?); First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Original 1856 printing and not a reprint. Two volume set. Beautiful tan 1/4 leather with marbled insets and endpapers. Gilt lettering. Contents clean and tight. A wonderful illustrated set. Very Handsome. Possibly no publication date in item however history shows author published this title in 1856 and craftsmanship would indicate an early period printing. The Dutch Republic was a republic that existed from the formal creation of a confederacy in 1581 by several Dutch provinces (which earlier seceded from the Spanish rule) until the Batavian Revolution in 1795. It was the predecessor state of the modern Netherlands and the first nation state of the Dutch people. John L. Motley was born on April 15, 1814 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. His grandfather, Thomas Motley, a jail-keeper (a public position) and innkeeper in Portland, Maine, had been a Freemason and radical sympathizer with the French Revolution. (An article in The Eastern Herald, the only newspaper then published in Maine, announced that "Citizen Motley" would host a celebration on Washington's Birthday 1793 "rejoicing at the emancipation of our sister republic, France." A collectors grade set.; Vol. 1 & 2; Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Tin Type of Young Girl, No Author
146 No Author Tin Type of Young Girl
New York Unknown c1896 First Edition; First Impression Ephemera Very Good with No dust jacket as issued
Tin type of young girl in period clothing ( late 1800's) She has hand resting on wooden plant stand. A great representation of period dress, hair style, and stoic pose. The tintype was developed in 1853 using a similar technique to the ambrotype. Called a collodion process, this technique requires the photographic material to be coated, exposed, and developed on site. This is not a book. The tintype image, however, was mounted against a thin sheet of black-enameled (or japanned) iron instead of glass. Unlike earlier photographs, a tintype is unbreakable.Interestingly, the term tintype is a misnomer. Because the iron they were mounted on was so thin, many assumed it must be tin, and the name stuck. The entire tintype process was quick and cheap. Within a few minutes, the customer could take an image home with him at the cost of a penny or less at first ; Photograph; ; 64mo 3" - 4½" tall; 17 pages

147 No Author Listed Calendar of transcripts including the annual report of the Department of archives and history (Virginia)
Richmond, VA Davis Bottom, Superintendent Public Printing 1905 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
Not a reprint but the original publication printed in 1905.Uncut pages.Very clean contents. Marbled end papers 1/4 leather spine and corners worn and cracked. A unique bookplate in front has the handwritten note that "This book belongs to Douglas Southall Freeman" as it came out of his personal library. Freeman was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War. His father was Walker Garland Freeman and his mother was Bettie Hamner. He did his undergraduate work at Richmond College where he joined the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. He received his Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins University at the age of 22.A long-time resident of Richmond, Virginia, Freeman served as editor of The Richmond News Leader from 1915 to 1949. However, it was his work as a historian and biographer that earned greatest recognition. He won Pulitzer Prizes for two of his books, his four-volume biography of Robert E. Lee, and his seven-volume biography of George Washington (a seventh volume First in Peace was written after Freeman's death by J. A. Carroll and M. W. Ashworth, two of his historical associates). He was also the author of the three-volume Lee's Lieutenants: A Study in Command.Freeman's treatments of the American Civil War are often cited as examples of the Lost Cause movement, emphasizing the glory and nobility of the Southern generals and the futility of their fight against the power of the North. While Freeman certainly does emphasize the nobility of Lee's character, he does not say that Lee made no mistakes, nor does he say that the North only won because of superior numbers. For instance, this passage shows Lee misjudging his real opponent, and also expresses admiration for Abraham Lincoln's character:[1] rare if not unique. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Signed by Author on Title Page. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. When some drug dealers in Camden, New Jersey get blown away by a smooth operator whos impersonating a cop, the case falls to two bleary-eyed, wisecracking police vets. But before they can even begin, an FBI team swoops in, headed by bossy and humorless Roger Sorenson. He identifies the perp as James Sullivan, an attorney who dropped out of sight a few years ago and has been taking out criminals ever since. Police sergeant Stacey Smith inadvertently crosses paths with Sullivan when her undercover stint as a prostitute interferes with Sullivans attack on some militiamen at a casino. In bits and pieces, its revealed that Sullivans vigilantism stems from criminal activity of his former colleague Dennis O’Brien, whom Sullivan blames for the death of his wife. OBrien uses his law firm to launder dirty money and keeps a tank of deadly sharks that lends the title its literal dimension.
