New never read. No dust as issued. Once again, Sarah Anne Johnson offers insightful interviews with some of today's most popular and accomplished writers. The authors offer insights and practical advice that will delight their fans and be cherished by aspiring writers. Michael Cunningham recalls how the structure of The Hours evolved as he wrote it. Edwidge Danticat honors the Haitian storytelling tradition she encountered in her childhood. And Jonathan Lethem reflects on working from inside and outside the literary establishment.

Her previous collection, Conversations with American Women Writers (UPNE, 2004), was described as "17 miniature instruction books on craft" by Publishers Weekly.

Author signed bookplate. In telling the story of Thomas Jefferson, the grounds at Monticello, and the many people, enslaved and free, who worked on the plantation, William Kelso's landmark work augments the written record of life there. Archeological excavations show that many of Jefferson's idealized projects were realized in very different form. In particular, the book contains significant new information about Mulberry Row, a line of workshops and dwellings where most of the plantation's industries were located. The wealth of material objects that Kelso's team unearthed form a fascinating and palpable link to the past. ; Monticello Monograph Series; 0.5 x 10 x 6.9 Inches; 136 pages; Signed by Author

Obsession and possession by spirits both good and evil in Oriental and occidental spiritualism and occultism among primitive races In antiquity, the middle ages, and modern times, Oesterreich, Traugott Konstantin
5 Oesterreich, Traugott Konstantin Obsession and possession by spirits both good and evil in Oriental and occidental spiritualism and occultism among primitive races In antiquity, the middle ages, and modern times
Chicago, IL de Laurence Co 1935 American Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Blue cover with gold print. Cover shows some wear and inside has some yellowing. Contents clean. A rare and sought after reference on Obsession and Possession. This American edition was prepared for publication by L.W. de Laurence. A recent historical view of Obsession from the web is: This belief may be found in the earliest records of human history—in the ancient magic rites and in the pronouncements often used as charms against and for the exorcism of these invading influences. The oldest literary remains from India, Greece, and Rome are filled with references to possession. While there are passing references to demons and demon obsession or possession in sacred Jewish writings—such as the case of Saul, who was "troubled with an evil spirit from God" only to be relieved by the music of David's harp (1 Sam. 16:14-16)—it is with the Christian movement that a major emphasis on spirit possession emerges. Jesus regularly healed by casting possessing spirits out of the mentally ill. Crucial to later understanding of possessing spirits in the Western tradition are incidents such as Jesus' driving the legion of demons into the swine (thus demonstrating their existence apart from the psychology of the possessed individual) and Paul's driving out of the divining spirit who possessed a young woman of Thyatira (thus associating spirit possession with fortune-telling) Scarce if not Rare. . ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 400 pages

8 Strickland, Denzil Swimmers in the Sea (Author Signed)
Press 53 2008 0981628028 / 9780981628028 First Edition; 1st Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket Signed by Author
Inscribed and signed by author on title page. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book. Swimmers in the Sea is a fiercely imagined novel by a newcomer to be watched. Author Denzil Strickland takes calamity and unflinchingly peels back its layers in this thrilling literary debut about a man who travels to pre-Katrina New Orleans to receive an unlikely inheritance from his estranged and dying father, a one-armed portrait artist convicted of manslaughter for the accident that killed his own two children and a newlywed couple leaving their wedding. At the age of thirty, Cliff Ebbets is broke and living in North Carolina, his marriage failing, when he receives a call from a man named Don Willis, his father's live-in companion. Don beckons Cliff to New Orleans for an inheritance he won't specify. Desperate but circumspect about anything to do with his father, Cliff concedes and travels back to the home of his earliest memory. There, he meets his father's friends, men from the underbelly of New Orleans' Ninth Ward, who paint a picture of Cecil Ebbets that Cliff doesn't recognize. It's the same picture he's being shown by the ghost of his dead sister Rachel. The twist in this tale of love and betrayal comes at the outset and wrings back and forth on itself throughout its telling. Swimmers in the Sea is a story about the other family and the son who inherits the sins of his father. It's the story of how the story of your life can change. Just like that. ; 1.2 x 8.6 x 6.2 Inches; 316 pages; Signed by Author
