Bobby Fischer Vs the Rest of the World, Darrach, Brad
2 Darrach, Brad Bobby Fischer Vs the Rest of the World
Stein & Day Pub 1974 0812816188 / 9780812816181 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Book and dust is in very good condition. In 1972, an epic chess match took place in Iceland between representatives of the two great super-powers of the world: Bobby vs. Boris. Boris was backed by the Mighty Soviet Union, with late night phone calls coming from his handlers in Moscow, telling him what his next move should be. Meanwhile, Bobby stood alone against the might of the opposing nation. But, Bobby was not exactly alone. The Americans did not need to tell him what moves to make on the chessboard. Bobby already knew how to do that. Rather, what the Americans needed to do was somehow to get him to sit down at the board and play the game. Here is the story of that titanic struggle: One half of the world trying to get Bobby to play, while the other half was trying to defeat him assuming that he did play. Hence the Title: Bobby Fischer vs. The Rest of the World. In the end, Bobby won. Émigrés from the Soviet Union often state that, more than any other single event, this defeat led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. (Editorial Review) ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 240 pages

Jeane Dixon My Life and Prophecies, Dixon, Jeane & Rene Noorbergen
3 Dixon, Jeane & Rene Noorbergen Jeane Dixon My Life and Prophecies
William Morrow 1969 0688021425 / 9780688021429 First Edition; Various Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket Signed by Author
White and blue cover, no dust or slipcase. Signed, "Blessings, Jean Dixon". Book is in Excellent Condition. Jean Dixon was one of the best-known American astrologers and psychics of the 20th century, due to her syndicated newspaper astrology column, and some well-publicized predictions and a best-selling biography. She is best known for allegedly predicting the assassination of President John F. Kennedy four years before he was elected. In the May 13, 1956, issue of Parade Magazine she wrote that the 1960 presidential election would be "dominated by labor and won by a Democrat" who would then go on to "be assassinated or die in office though not necessarily in his first term." Five years later Jeane Dixon was addressing a meeting in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles when questioned if Robert Kennedy would ever become President. 'No,' she had answered. 'He will never become President of the United States because of a tragedy right here in this hotel.' A week later Robert Kennedy did win the California Democratic primary and he had just finished addressing a victory rally at the Ambassador Hotel's ballroom when he was shot. He died the following day. Also in January 1942 Dixon had warned the Hollywood film actress Carole Lombard (married to Clark Gable at the time) that it would be dangerous for her to travel by plane within the next six weeks. Lombard, scheduled to appear at a War Bond rally did not heed Dixon's warning, she died in an airplane crash within three days of the warning. President Richard Nixon referred to Jean Dixon as "the soothsayer" and ordered preparations for a terrorist attack that Dixon had predicted, of course the prediction did not come true during Nixon's term. She was also one of several astrologers who gave advice to Nancy Reagan during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. She died of cardiac arrest in Washington, D.C. on January 25, 1997, at the age of 93. The authors offer insights and practical advice that will delight their fans and be cherished by aspiring writers. Michael Cunningham recalls how the structure of The Hours evolved as he wrote it. Edwidge Danticat honors the Haitian storytelling tradition she encountered in her childhood. And Jonathan Lethem reflects on working from inside and outside the literary establishment.

Author signed bookplate. In telling the story of Thomas Jefferson, the grounds at Monticello, and the many people, enslaved and free, who worked on the plantation, William Kelso's landmark work augments the written record of life there. Archeological excavations show that many of Jefferson's idealized projects were realized in very different form. In particular, the book contains significant new information about Mulberry Row, a line of workshops and dwellings where most of the plantation's industries were located. The wealth of material objects that Kelso's team unearthed form a fascinating and palpable link to the past. ; Monticello Monograph Series; 0.5 x 10 x 6.9 Inches; 136 pages; Signed by Author

Obsession and possession by spirits both good and evil in Oriental and occidental spiritualism and occultism among primitive races In antiquity, the middle ages, and modern times, Oesterreich, Traugott Konstantin
6 Oesterreich, Traugott Konstantin Obsession and possession by spirits both good and evil in Oriental and occidental spiritualism and occultism among primitive races In antiquity, the middle ages, and modern times
Chicago, IL de Laurence Co 1935 American Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Blue cover with gold print. Cover shows some wear and inside has some yellowing. Contents clean. A rare and sought after reference on Obsession and Possession. This American edition was prepared for publication by L.W. de Laurence. A recent historical view of Obsession from the web is: This belief may be found in the earliest records of human history—in the ancient magic rites and in the pronouncements often used as charms against and for the exorcism of these invading influences. The oldest literary remains from India, Greece, and Rome are filled with references to possession. While there are passing references to demons and demon obsession or possession in sacred Jewish writings—such as the case of Saul, who was "troubled with an evil spirit from God" only to be relieved by the music of David's harp (1 Sam. 16:14-16)—it is with the Christian movement that a major emphasis on spirit possession emerges. Jesus regularly healed by casting possessing spirits out of the mentally ill. Crucial to later understanding of possessing spirits in the Western tradition are incidents such as Jesus' driving the legion of demons into the swine (thus demonstrating their existence apart from the psychology of the possessed individual) and Paul's driving out of the divining spirit who possessed a young woman of Thyatira (thus associating spirit possession with fortune-telling) Scarce if not Rare. . ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 400 pages

Press 53 2008 0981628028 / 9780981628028 First Edition; 1st Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket Signed by Author
Inscribed and signed by author on title page. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book. Swimmers in the Sea is a fiercely imagined novel by a newcomer to be watched. Author Denzil Strickland takes calamity and unflinchingly peels back its layers in this thrilling literary debut about a man who travels to pre-Katrina New Orleans to receive an unlikely inheritance from his estranged and dying father, a one-armed portrait artist convicted of manslaughter for the accident that killed his own two children and a newlywed couple leaving their wedding. At the age of thirty, Cliff Ebbets is broke and living in North Carolina, his marriage failing, when he receives a call from a man named Don Willis, his father's live-in companion. Don beckons Cliff to New Orleans for an inheritance he won't specify. Desperate but circumspect about anything to do with his father, Cliff concedes and travels back to the home of his earliest memory. There, he meets his father's friends, men from the underbelly of New Orleans' Ninth Ward, who paint a picture of Cecil Ebbets that Cliff doesn't recognize. It's the same picture he's being shown by the ghost of his dead sister Rachel. The twist in this tale of love and betrayal comes at the outset and wrings back and forth on itself throughout its telling. Swimmers in the Sea is a story about the other family and the son who inherits the sins of his father. It's the story of how the story of your life can change. Just like that. ; 1.2 x 8.6 x 6.2 Inches; 316 pages; Signed by Author
