In ole Virginia; Or, Marse Chan and other stories,, Page, Thomas Nelson
13 Page, Thomas Nelson In ole Virginia; Or, Marse Chan and other stories,
C. Scribner's sons 1887 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Green cloth cover worn. Vines within red outlined box on cover. Text clean and binding tight. Author's first book. Thomas Nelson Page was born April 23, 1853 at Oakland, his family's Virginia plantation in Hanover County. His parents, John Page and Elizabeth Burwell Nelson, both descendants of the old southern aristocracy, had suffered financially in the years following the Civil War. Page was a major figure in the Genteel School of Southern letters in the postbellum period. Among his works were commentaries on Southern social conditions as well as his fiction. Page's first book, a collection of short stories titled In Ole Virginia or Marse Chan and Other Stories, was published by Charles Scribner's in 1887. Set in the postbellum South while often recalling the splendors of antebellum life, these six tales included the four that had appeared previously in Century and Harper's while adding the unpublished "No Haid Pawn" and "Polly: A Christmas Recollection." Of Page's short stories, perhaps "Marse Chan" has received the most critical attention. In addition to making frequent use of dialect, it typifies those idealized qualities of old southern life Page so frequently celebrates. The story's narrative structure is framed by a northerner visiting Virginia in autumn 1872. ; 7.10 X 4.70 X 1 inches; 230 pages

New York Harcourt 1994 0151179875 / 9780151179879 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Book looks new. Dust in Mylar. A woman steps into a circus magician's box, and the box is set on fire. When the woman fails to reappear and the circus itself vanishes overnight, Alex Barton sets out to find his missing wife. Bizarre clues lead him to a mysterious island, where he encounters a faceless private army, a theater where performance and the stage have become objects of veneration, and a Fellini-esque circus concealed within a hollowed-out mountain. Tortured, tempted, analyzed, Alex sheds his identity and assumes a new one, as a tightrope walker whose strength is his vulnerability. As the line between the real and the surreal blur, Alex must discover what may--or may not--be the truth about his wife and himself. " circus vanishing act that abruptly terminates a marriage sets the stage for this tale of a lover's quest: a brooding, violent first novel from ex-tiger groom Stevens." (Krikus Review); 9.50 X 6.50 X 1.40 inches; 410 pages
