The battle of Point Pleasant; an address by Landon C. Bell, Bell, Landon Covington
19 Bell, Landon Covington The battle of Point Pleasant; an address by Landon C. Bell
Bedford, Va The Peaks of Otter Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution 1931 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
Paperback imprint of this famous address. Stored in an archival envelope with a hardside folder. Excellent condition. The Battle of Point Pleasant — known as the Battle of Kanawha in some older accounts — was the only major action of Dunmore's War. It was fought on October 10, 1774, primarily between Virginia militia and Indians from the Shawnee and Mingo tribes. Along the Ohio River near modern Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Indians under the Shawnee Chief Cornstalk attacked Virginia militia under Colonel Andrew Lewis, hoping to halt Lewis's advance into the Ohio Valley. After a long and furious battle, Cornstalk retreated. After the battle, the Virginians, along with a second force led by Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia, marched into the Ohio Valley and compelled Cornstalk to agree to a treaty, ending the war. (Wiki) Landon Covington Bell (1880-1960) was a lawyer and author who compiled/published vital records for several Virginia counties in the early 1900s (many of which are frequently cited in genealogical records for ancestors from "Southside" Virginia) He was industry advisor to the US Commerce Dept. under Sec. Hoover; and, he was an organizer of the Southern Coal Producers Assoc. He was a noted author of history and genealogy.; 16 pages
