The Prisoner of Zenda, Hope, Anthony (S C Roberts, Intro) & Donald Spencer
7 Hope, Anthony (S C Roberts, Intro) & Donald Spencer The Prisoner of Zenda
New York Heritage Press 1966 1st Edition Thus; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket Illustrated by Donald Spencer
In slipcase, looks never read. The Prisoner of Zenda (1894), by Anthony Hope, is an adventure novel in which the King of Ruritania is drugged on the eve of his coronation and thus is unable to attend the ceremony. Political forces within the realm are such that, in order for the king to retain the crown, his coronation must proceed. Fortuitously, an English gentleman on holiday in Ruritania who resembles the monarch is persuaded to act as his political decoy in an effort to save the unstable political situation of the interregnum. Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, better known as Anthony Hope (9 February 1863 – 8 July 1933), was an English novelist and playwright.[1] He was a prolific writer, especially of adventure novels but he is remembered predominantly for only two books: The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898). These works, "minor classics" of English literature, are set in the contemporaneous fictional country of Ruritania and spawned the genre known as Ruritanian romance, works set in fictional European locales similar to the novels. Zenda has inspired many adaptations, most notably the 1937 Hollywood movie of the same name. (wikipedia); Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 185 pages

Brigadier General John D. Imboden Confederate Commander in the Shenandoah, Tucker, Spencer C.
15 Tucker, Spencer C. Brigadier General John D. Imboden Confederate Commander in the Shenandoah
The University Press of Kentucky 2002 081312266X / 9780813122663 First Edition Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket Signed by Author
Inscribed bookplate in front of book to former owner and signed by author. John D. Imboden is an important but often overlooked figure in Civil War history. With only limited militia training, the Virginia lawyer and politician rose to the rank of brigadier general in the Confederate Army and commanded the Shenandoah Valley District, which had been created for Stonewall Jackson.

Imboden organized and led the Staunton Artillery in the capture of the U.S. arsenal at Harper’s Ferry. He participated in the First Battle of Bull Run/Manassas and organized a cavalry command that fought alongside Stonewall Jackson in his Shenandoah Valley Campaign. The Jones/Imboden Raid into West Virginia cut the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and ravaged the Kanawha Valley petroleum fields. Imboden covered the Confederate withdrawal from Gettysburg and later led cavalry accompanying Jubal Early in his operations against Philip Sheridan in Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Imboden completed his war service in command of Confederate prisons in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Spencer C. Tucker fully examines the life of this Confederate cavalry commander, including analysis of Imboden’s own post-war writing, and explores overlooked facets of his life, such as his involvement in the Confederate prison system, his later efforts to restore the economic life of his home state of Virginia by developing its natural resources, and his founding of the city of Damascus, which he hoped to make into a new iron and steel center. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book. Rare.; 1.3 x 8.8 x 6.6 Inches; 392 pages; Signed by Author
