Black or dark blue leather cover with embossed lettering on cover and gilt print on spine. Marbled endpapers. Excellent illustrations throughout. Looks unused. This book was part of an early correspondence course from International Correspondence Schools Ltd. The school was founded in 1889 in Scranton, Pennsylvania by journalist and editor of the Mining Herald*, Thomas J. Foster. Alarmed by frequent mine accidents, Foster advocated better working conditions and stricter safety regulations, which led to Pennsylvania's adoption of the Mine Safety Act of 1885 and the requirement for miners to pass a safety exam. The mission of the school was to 'provide practical men with a technical education, and technical men with a practical education. The organisation expanded to the UK in 1904 and is known as ICS Learn. Scarce if not rare book.; Vol. 180; Illustrated; 12mo 7" - 7" tall

Vol 1 has 526 pages and 15 illustrations, Volume 2 has 562 pages with 15 illustrations and a full index for both volumes. Joseph Peter Lesley (17 September 1819 1 June 1903) was an American geologist. He spent three years assisting Henry D. Rogers in the first geological survey of Pennsylvania. He also graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary and was licensed to preach by the presbytery of Philadelphia. He made extensive and important researches in the coal, oil, and iron fields of the United States and Canada and became State geologist of Pennsylvania in 1874.His wife, Susan Inches Lesley (1823-1904), was the daughter of Judge Joseph Lyman, of Northampton, Massachusetts. Cyrus Townsend Brady, Rector" on end paper. Cyrus Townsend Brady (December 20, 1861 January 24, 1920) was a journalist, historian and adventure writer. His best-known work is Indian Fights and Fighters. He was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1883. In 1889, he was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal church, and was ordained a priest in 1890. His first wife was Clarissa Guthrie, who died in 1890. His second wife was Mary Barrett. Brady's first major book, For Love of Country, whilst telling the story of a fictitious John Seymour, was actually based in part on the true heroics of Nicholas Biddle, one of the first five captains of the fledgling Continental Navy.
