Chappell, a retired Methodist minister who was the first principal at Grove High School (Paris, Tn) , died Friday (1972) at his home in Waverly of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 90.Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Waverly Methodist Church with burial in Richlawn Cemetery.Dr. Chappell was principal and coach at Grove from 1906 to 1908. He was ordained into the ministry of the Methodist Church in 1908, and over the next 41 years held pastorates in Washington, Memphis, Houston, Birmingham and Charlotte, North Carolina. He officially retired in 1949 but filled numerous speaking engagements each year throughout the country.Born at Flat Woods, Tennessee on January 8, 1882, he studied at Trinity (now Duke) and Harvard Universities. He held doctoral degrees from Duke, Centenary College of Louisiana, and Birmingham Southern College.He was the author of some 35 religious books which were distributed throughout the world.He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cecil Hart Chappell; two sons, Clovis G. He studied at Lausanne under Vnet. In 1847 he was ordained pastor of the Evangelical Free Chruch and was made a professor in the Free School of Theological Science. Several of his works including this one was translated into English by Annie Harwood. His wife Elise was born in Switzerland and she published several religious stories including Rosa in 1838. In 1873 he became agrégé, subsequently becoming director of the anthropological laboratory at the École des Hautes Etudes and an anatomy professor at the École Supérieur des Beaux-Arts. In 1885 he replaced Charles-Philippe Robin (1821–1895) as professor of histology at the medical faculty in Paris. In 1892 he became a member of the Académie de Médecine. This looks to be a presentation copy. Author wrote (some words not sure of transposition due to handwriting) "Rookwood, Dec 18, 1900, To The Wishers of Hell Fer Sartain- the same- from the friends of John Fox, Jr... Being sure, meanwhile that she will never know it in any worse form" Rookwood may refer to a famous hunting dog Kennel near Lexington, Kentucky. Book is reddish-brown with green and gold gilt design on front. Top and bottom edge of spine somewhat freyed. Pages uneven cut. Hell Fer Sartin is "Hell for Certain" in southern dialect. Fox wrote at times in this dialect as if "talking southern". Born near Paris, Kentucky, on December 16, 1862, John Fox Jr. was the son of a schoolmaster in Kentucky's Bourbon County. He enjoyed the benefits of quality education in childhood and attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, before graduating from Harvard in 1883. Fox then worked as a journalist in New York City before returning to Kentucky in 1885. He died of pneumonia on July 8, 1919, and is buried in Paris, Kentucky. He served as rector of Amiens, Alençon, and Orleans and later was in charge of the professed house at Paris. He spent some time in England during the reign of Charles I. All three volumes. Original brown boards have heavy edge and corner wear. Spines have been taped over with brown library tape and has white writing. The spines underneath the tape look to be blue cloth. It is not known the condition of the bindings under the tape. These are ex-library from the Peabody Normal College at the University of Nashville with a withdrawn stamp inside on the library labels. Vol 1 and 2 were published in 1835 and covers books in the library up to 1835. Vol. 2 has a rare index for Vol 1 & 2 , Vol 3's index is ehaustive for all three volumes.Vol #3 covers books added from 1835 to 1856. This vol 3 has a presentation label to the "University of Tennessee, Nashville from The Library Company Company of Philadelphia. Front Hinge for vol 3 is al most detached. Volumes 1 & 2 are tight bindings. Contents of all volumes have foxing, otherwise clean. It looks as though Volumes 1 and 3 have had the pages trimmed as Vol. 2 has uneven pages. These rare volumes are some of the first, if not the first, example of subject arrangements used by the Paris Book Sellers of the day who use a new and innovative arrangement style. They are one of the best references for a cross section of the Library of Philadelphia which was the largest library of that era and remains one of the most prestegious libraries in the world. Foxing to pages and hinges may be weak or broken. All three volumes in the set. Rare if not unique.; Vol. 123; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
