13 Morgan, John The Last Dollar or Uncle Tom's Cabin Inverted and The Pilgrim's Progress Exemplified
Kansas City, MO Franklin Hudson Publishers c1896 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
No publication date on title page, but research of the Morgan papers at Marshall University puts it around 1896. Cover has log cabin on front, and has minor soiling. Contents clean with light browning due to age, has photos. This is a very interesting book written about the authors life, service in the Confederate Army of Virginia, loss of his brother at Fayetteville, W. Va. And his reflections on the Civil War as many as 20 years after. He was given a special pass to return home to see his dying sister after his grandfather, Col. J. M. H. Beale, wrote to him. One of his last comments in the book is "I do not believe it is in my nature to be anything but Southern and Democratic." John Morgan Sr. was probably born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, near the beginning of the nineteenth century. In 1832, he married Elizabeth Ann Beale, daughter of Colonel James Madison Hite Beale, and granddaughter of William Steenbergen, both wealthy landowners in Shenandoah County. Their son, John Morgan, Jr.(author of The Last Dollar), was born in 1840. They were also the parents of two other sons, James B. and William Steenbergen Morgan, and a daughter. In 1846, John and Elizabeth Morgan brought their family to a farm on the Kanawha River in what is now Putnam County, opposite the mouth of the Pocatalico River. During the Civil War, the three sons served in the Confederate Army: John Jr. was a member of Company A, 22nd Virginia Regiment; James was a captain the 36th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, and William, who was killed at Fayette Court House, (West) Virginia in 1862, was a member of Company A, 36th Regiment. The daughter died of consumption during the war. After the Civil War, John, Jr. and James returned to Putnam County and engaged in farming.John Morgan, Jr., was born i n 1840. On October 12, 1875, John Morgan, Jr., married Samantha Jane Atkeson, daughter of Thomas and Virginia Brown Atkeson. Samantha A. Morgan was born in Mason County, (West) Virginia, on January 27, 1843. She and John Morgan Jr. were the parents of four sons: John Morgan III, born August 1876; Thomas Atkeson, born April 15, 1878; Rembrandt, born June 19, 1880; and Albert Sidney, birth date unknown. The Morgan Family Papers 1831-1935 are contained in the Special Collections Department at Marshall University, Huntington, W. Va. This book is protected by an archival quality sleeve to maintain present condition. We provide delivery tracking on US orders. Very Rare.; Photographs; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 96 pages
