Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and Kindred Sciences, New, Revised and Enlarged, Volumes 1 & 2, Clegg, Robert I.
5 Clegg, Robert I. Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and Kindred Sciences, New, Revised and Enlarged, Volumes 1 & 2
Chicago, Il The Masonic History Company 1929 Revised Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with No dust jacket as issued
Two volume set.Revised and enlarged. Blue grey leather cover with gold lettering.Very clean contents some pages and end papers show browning due to age. Former owners name in front. Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation that traces its origins to the local fraternities of stonemasons, which from the end of the fourteenth century regulated the qualifications of masons and their interaction with authorities and clients. The degrees of freemasonry, its gradal system, retain the three grades of medieval craft guilds, those of Apprentice, journeyman or fellow (now called Fellowcraft), and Master Mason. These are the degrees offered by craft, or blue lodge Freemasonry. There are additional degrees, which vary with locality and jurisdiction, and are now administered by different bodies than the craft degrees. The basic, local organisational unit of Freemasonry is the lodge. The lodges are usually supervised and governed at the regional level (usually coterminous with either a state, province, or national border) by a Grand Lodge or Grand Orient. There is no international, world-wide Grand Lodge that supervises all of Freemasonry. Each Grand Lodge is independent, and they do not necessarily recognise each other as being legitimate. In the area of History, especially Masonic History, very few men stand out like our Frater Robert Ingham Glegg, IXº. Many Masons may recognize his name; yet they cannot quite put their finger on his accomplishments. Probably his most remarkable achievement was his later revisions and addendum to "Mackey's Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and its Kindred Sciences" in conjunction with other noted Masonic scholars such as Bro:. William James Hughan. In the 1800's (with original author --Bro. Mackey) and continuing into the early 1900s and even today, that work stands-out as the preeminent reference guide for "all things Masonic." Frater Clegg was appointed the Chief Adept of the New Jersey College S.R.I.C.F., Under Dispensation, on April 29, 1931, even before that College received its Charter on May 10, 1932. Reviewer A very heavy two volume set. ; Freemasonry; Vol. 1 & 2; Photos and illustrations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 1155 pages

Inscribed and signed by author for seller at a gun show in Louisville, Ky, 2014. We could call this book Special Operations Recon Mission Impossible. A small group of highly trained, resourceful US Special Forces (SF) men is asked to go in teams behind the enemy lines to gather intelligence on the North Vietnamese Army units that had infiltrated through Laos and Cambodia down the Ho Chi Minh trails to their secret bases inside the Cambodian border west of South Vietnam. The covert reconnaissance teams, of only two or three SF men with four or five experienced indigenous mercenaries each, were tasked to go into enemy target areas by foot or helicopter insertion. They could be 15 kilometers beyond any other friendly forces, with no artillery support. In sterile uniforms with no insignia or identification, if they were killed or captured, their government would deny their military connection. The enemy had placed a price on their heads and had spies in their Top Secret headquarters known as SOG. SOG had three identical recon ground units along the border areas. This book tells the history of Command and Control Detachment South (CCS) The CCS volunteer warriors and its Air Partners - the Army and Air Force helicopter transport and gunship crews who lived and fought together and sometimes died together. This is the first published history of CCS as compiled by its last living commander, some forty years after they were disbanded. It tells of the struggles and intrigue involved in SOG's development as the modernday legacy of our modern Special Operations Commands. Forbidden to tell of their experiences for over twenty years; their After Action Reports destroyed even before they were declassified - surviving veterans team together to tell how Recon men wounded averaged 100 percent; and SOG became the most highly decorated unit in Vietnam and all were awarded the Presidential Unit. Very Rare.; CCS; Photographs and illustrations; 11 X 8.20 X 1.60 inches; 740 pages; Signed by Author

The Fabulous History of the Dismal Swamp Company A Story of George Washington's Times, Royster, Charles
12 Royster, Charles The Fabulous History of the Dismal Swamp Company A Story of George Washington's Times
Knopf 1999 0679433457 / 9780679433453 First Edition; Various Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Maroon cover with gold lettering. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. In this absorbing narrative Charles Royster traces the rise and fall of the eighteenth-century transatlantic culture that was built on the insatiable demand in Europe for Virginia tobacco and the equally insatiable American demand for European manufactured goods.

Moving from the plantations of Virginia and Antigua to the warehouses of London and Glasgow, from the Gold Coast of Africa to the valleys of the Allegheny Mountains, from the iron furnaces of southern Wales to the subscribers' room of Lloyd's of London, Professor Royster gives us the story of the Dismal Swamp Company, a fantastically delusional enterprise that proposed draining and developing a vast morass along the Virginia-North Carolina border. Examining the interconnected lives of the company's partners, Royster reveals a colonial order built on a system of cronyism, conspicuous consumption, and debt that seems hauntingly familiar. He writes about the many schemers and dreamers (including George Washington, Robert "King" Carter, two William Byrds, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and Robert Morris) who failed to amass their desired fortunes, and a few realists (Samuel Gist, Dr. Thomas Walker, and Anthony Bacon) who succeeded, but at the dire expense of others. And we see the breakdown of this culture and the transition to a more democratic, though similar, system after the Revolution.

Throughout Royster's narrative we seepossessors possessed by their possessions, slaveholders possessed by slavery, and heirs possessed by litigation. Connecting all their stories are their unceasing efforts to make something substantial out of the insubstantial--chief among them the almost unbelievable delusion that fortunes could be made from the Dismal Swamp.; 2.1 x 9.7 x 6.7 Inches; 640 pages

Indianapolis, IN Bobbs-Merrill Company 1929 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Brown cover gold print. Hinges a bit shaken. Yellowing to some pages from age. Former owners name written inside front cover. Also signed in the front is "Helen M. Bailey, American Embassy, Mexico City". Helen Miller Bailey, PhD, taught at East Los Angeles College for more than forty years. She used a series of travel films for instructional purposes in the classroom as well as in travel lectures for the general public. Bailey spent eleven summers in Mexico, Central America, and South America between 1933 and 1954, and wrote several books about Latin American history and society. The term tidewater may be correctly applied to all portions of any area, including Virginia, where the water level is affected by the tides (more specifically, where the water level rises when the tide comes in). In the case of Virginia, the Tidewater region includes the land east of the Fall Line, the natural border with the Piedmont Region. It includes Hampton Roads, the rest of the Virginia Peninsula, the Middle Peninsula, the Northern Neck, and the Eastern Shore. Planters in the early American colonies extended their tobacco productions above the Fall Line, where waterfalls or rapids mark the end of the Tidewater and the beginning of the foothill region known as the Piedmont. About the author: Wrote books about Washington's Mount Vernon, Jefferson's Monticello and the Potomac and Hudson Rivers. Served as a lieutenant commander in the US Navy during World War I. His father, John Augustine Wilstach (1824-1897), received critical acclaim for his translations of works by the Roman author Virgil and Dante's "Divine Comedy". ; Photographs, Black and White; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 326 pages; ; Signed by Notable Personage, Unrelated
