This looks to be a presentation copy. Author wrote (some words not sure of transposition due to handwriting) "Rookwood, Dec 18, 1900, To The Wishers of Hell Fer Sartain- the same- from the friends of John Fox, Jr... Being sure, meanwhile that she will never know it in any worse form" Rookwood may refer to a famous hunting dog Kennel near Lexington, Kentucky. Book is reddish-brown with green and gold gilt design on front. Top and bottom edge of spine somewhat freyed. Pages uneven cut. Hell Fer Sartin is "Hell for Certain" in southern dialect. Fox wrote at times in this dialect as if "talking southern". Born near Paris, Kentucky, on December 16, 1862, John Fox Jr. was the son of a schoolmaster in Kentucky's Bourbon County. He enjoyed the benefits of quality education in childhood and attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, before graduating from Harvard in 1883. Fox then worked as a journalist in New York City before returning to Kentucky in 1885. He died of pneumonia on July 8, 1919, and is buried in Paris, Kentucky. Rare. ; 12mo 7" - 7" tall; 119 pages; Signed by Author
