A Man Called Lucy, Accoce, Pierre And Quet, Pierre
1 Accoce, Pierre And Quet, Pierre A Man Called Lucy
New York Coward Mccann 1967 First American Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Book and dust in excellent condition, looks never read. Roessler became a Russian Spy. Roessler's information came straight from the German High command. He would get radio contact from the Official Broadcasting Center of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht. The information was given to a transmitter who only knew Roessler by his call number "RAHS." Any information regarding the German army was preceded by "Werther" "Olga" for the Air Force. His information contained troop movements, invasion timetables, production statistics, casualty counts, and loss of equipment for each battle. Often, his information was transmitted to the Russians before the German units received orders. The amount of information Rudolf Roessler sent over the course of five years to Russia could fill about 40 average length books. That is about 5,500 messages or 5 messages a day for 3 years, or approximately 129 messages a month. Russia used the information to wage psychological warfare. This was an unqualified success, and many German soldiers suffered mental breakdowns as a result. ; WWII spy Rudolf Roessler; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 250 pages

A Moral Military, Axinn, Sidney
11 Axinn, Sidney A Moral Military
Temple University Press 1990 0877227802 / 9780877227809 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
; 0.75 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 230 pages; Should a good soldier ever disobey a direct military order? Are there restrictions on how we fight a war? What is meant by 'military honor', and does it really affect the contemporary soldier? Is human dignity possible under battlefield conditions? Sidney Axinn considers these basic ethical questions within the context of the laws of warfare and answers 'yes' to each of these questions. In this study of the conduct of war, he examines actions that are honorable or dishonorable and provides the first full-length treatment of the military conventions from a philosophical point of view. Axinn gives a philosophical analysis of the 'Laws of Warfare' as found in the Hague and Geneva Conventions, which have been agreed to by almost every nation in the world. The aims of his study are to establish a basic twentieth-century framework for moral military action and to assist military personnel in analyzing their won professional ethic.Stating that moral reasoning is required by people in military uniform in a wide variety of situations, the author examines the question of the limits of military obedience. Axinn argues for the seriousness of the concept of military honor but limits honorable military activity by a strict interpretation of the notion of war crime. Major chapters deal with military honor, prisoners of war, spying, war crimes, the dirty-hands theory of command, nuclear weapons, terrorism, and covert operations. This philosophical study of the line between honorable and dishonorable military action cautions that in compliance with the war conventions professional military personnel and knowledgeable civilians must not lose their moral nerve nor abandon honor to satisfy immoral political requests. Author note: Sidney Axinn is Professor of Philosophy at Temple University.

More Fragments from France,, Bairnsfather, Captain Bruce
14 Bairnsfather, Captain Bruce More Fragments from France,
London, England The Bystander c 1917 First Edition; First Impression paperback Very Good with no dust jacket Illustrated by Author
Color inset on front cover. Cover is detached from staples but both front and back are there. Contents clean with great illustrations. Bruce Bairnsfather, the son of Thomas Bairnsfather and Amelia Every, was born in Muree, India, in 1888. Bruce's father was a Lieutenant in the Bengal Infantry. After attending schools in India and Stratford-upon-Avon, Bruce joined the British Army. Bairnsfather found army life boring and left the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and enrolled as an art student at the Hassall School of Art. After completing his training he produced advertising posters for products such as Lipton Tea, Players's Tobacco and Flowers Beer. On the outbreak of the First World War Bairnsfather rejoined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and within a couple of weeks had been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. After the Battle of Mons the British Army was desperately short of trained soldiers and Bairnsfather was quickly rushed to the Western Front where he served with people such as Captain Bernard Montgomery and Lieutenant A. A. Milne. Bairnsfather, who was put in charge of a Maxim Machine-Gun section, was shocked by trench-life and even refused to take leave, fearing that once he left, he would find it too difficult to return. During the Christmas of 1914, Bairnsfather came close to being court-martialed after joining German soldiers in what later became known as the Christmas Truce. While on the Western Front, Bairnsfather drew pictures of trench life and in 1915 The Bystander magazine began publishing his drawings. Bairnsfather's work was extremely popular with the soldiers in the trenches and this helped sales of the magazine. This book is protected by an archival quality sleeve to maintain present condition. Scarce. ; Illustrations; Oblong 4to 11" - 13; 44 pages

Stackpole Books 2003 0811700178 / 9780811700177 First Edition; Various Hardcover Very Good in As New dust jacket
Tan and black cover with gilt print. Some marginal notations from the former owner an Army Chaplain who may have used them for sermon notes. Condition otherwise like new. For both Union and Confederate soldiers, religion was the greatest sustainer of morale in the Civil War, and faith was a refuge in a great time of need. Guarding and guiding the spiritual well-being of the fighters, army chaplains were a voice of hope and reason in an otherwise chaotic military existence. Here for the first time, encompassing the depth and breadth of their dedication and sacrifice, is their fascinating and uplifting story. Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr., is an alumni distinguished professor of history and the executive director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech. William C. Davis is professor of history and director of programs of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies. John Brinsfield is a retired army chaplain in Atlanta, Georgia. Benjamin Maryniak is a lifelong student of the Civil War in Lancaster, New York. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover.; Photographs; 9.10 X 6.10 X 1 inches; 256 pages
