Signed by author on end paper. Green cloth with gilt print. 1/4" tear at top of spine has numbers written in on bottom of spine. No library evidence inside of book as it is very clean. Plates in great shape. The following is a bio of the author. Stransky, Josef (Humpolec, Bohemia, 1872 - NY, 1936) Bohemian conductor. Studied medicine, qualifying as doctor in Prague 1896. While at Prague Univ. Also studied music. , becoming comp. Pupil of Fuchs, Bruckner, and Dvorák in Vienna. Principal Conductor. , Landestheater, Prague, 1898, Hamburg 1903-10. Also conductor In Berlin, Dresden, London, Amsterdam, etc. Succeeded Mahler as conductor NYPO 1911, holding post until 1923. Retired 1924, going into art-dealing business. Wrote operas and other works, and adapted Berlioz's Béatrice et Bénédict. Figures in R. Strauss's opera Intermezzo as Stroh; he was the conductor For whom Strauss was mistaken by an importunate lady, thereby nearly precipitating Strauss's divorce. Extremely Rare inscription : "To Humy, Josef Stransky, Oct 191_". (cannot tell the last digit, must be after 1916 since that is date of publication) Includes works by The Classicists, The Liebl Circle, The Munich School, The Berlin School, The Dusseldorf School, The Austraian-Hungarian School, and The Swiss School.
