The Elsie Dinsmore series have been classfied by some as An Enigma. Elsie lived a spoiled life. "The most disturbing flow in the first two books is over the conflict of whom to obey, God or Man." Miss Finley pits an 8 year old little girl against her adult father. She confuses the issue by having Elsie having to choose to obey God or her father. Miss Finley was one of the most prolific writers of girl stories in the 19th century. Her series included works published by the Presbyterian Publications Board, and Dodd-Mead. Another character in her writing was Mildred Keith. This book is scarce in this condition. This book is protected by an archival quality sleeve to maintain present condition. Martha Finley (1828 - 1909) was a teacher and author of numerous works, the most well known being the 28 volume Elsie Dinsmore series which was published over a span of 38 years. The daughter of Presbyterian minister Dr. James Brown Finley and his wife and cousin Maria Theresa Brown Finley, she was born on April 26th, 1828 in Chillicothe, Ohio. Finley wrote many of her books under the pseudonym Martha Farquharson. She died in 1909 in Elkton, Maryland, where she moved in 1876.;
