Scarce if not rare genealogical reference. Rev. James Alexander Pearl Born 17 Apr 1807 in Knox County, Ohio, Father of Joseph A. Pearl, James Smith Pearl, John Alexander Pearl, Hannah Jane Pearl, Malinda (Pearl) Keeney, Isabella Caroline (Pearl) Kirk, Elizabeth Ann (Pearl) Van Winkle, Hannah R. Pearl, Minerva Pearl, Mary (Pearl) Robinett, William Henry Pearl, Silas Harrison Pearl, Redman Pearl, Sherman H. Pearl, Florence James Alexander Pearl was born according to his own family Bible on 17 April 1807 in probably Knox County, Ohio, USA. His most probable parents according to the Pearl Family Website are Alexander Perrill (c. 1770-c.1814) and Grace Beaumont (c. 1770-c. 1815) who were married on 29 May 1791 in Frederick, Maryland. Since he was orphaned at such an early age, it is difficult to know for certain that these were his parents, but there is fairly good evidence. The name as his father used it was Perrill. James used Pearl. There were many Perrill families in Maryland. ; 1807-1897; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 41 pages

3412 Seward, Janet W. Personal experiences of the Civil War
Worcester, Ma F. S. Blanchard & Co. 1899 1166553507 First Edition; First Printing Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
This is the original 1899 printing. Janet Seward was the wife of Brigadier General Willam Henry Seward, Jr. who's father was the Governor of New York. Brig. General Seward was also an American Banker from Auburn, N.Y. He left banking on August 22, 1862 to join the Union Army in the U.S. Civil War. "Seward was appointed lieutenant colonel of New York's 138th Infantry Regiment, which became the 9th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment in December 1862. The regiment served in the defenses of Washington, D.C. until it was converted back to an infantry regiment and sent to the Army of the Potomac because of the losses sustained by that army in the Overland Campaign.[2] After fighting at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Seward was appointed colonel of the regiment on June 10, 1864. A few weeks after Seward's promotion to colonel, his regiment was sent north to meet the threat to Washington, D.C. posed by Confederate Lieutenant General Jubal Early's Valley Campaigns of 1864. Seward was slightly wounded in his arm and suffered a broken leg when his horse fell on him after the horse was shot at the Battle of Monocacy on July 9, 1864. He was promoted to brigadier general on September 13, 1864 and in January 1865 was assigned to command a brigade in the Department of West Virginia, which he did until April 1865. He was thereafter known within his family as "The General". Seward commanded the 3rd Division for 6 days after Confederate partisan rangers captured Brigadier General George Crook on February 20, 1865." (Wikipedia) The contents of this booklet was written by Mrs. Seward for "The Fortnightly" a a Woman's Literary Club in Auburn, N.Y. Ianuary 20, 1898. Mrs. Seward acompanyed President Lincoln and her husband's cousin Col. Seward on an inspections of the works around Washington. Book now in archival sleeve to protect condition. 3428 Shepherd, Samuel C. Jr. Avenues of Faith Shaping the Urban Religious Culture of Richmond, Virginia 1900-1929
Tuscaloosa, AL The University of Alabama Press 2001 0817310762 First Edition; Various Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
Brown cover with gold lettering. Dust jacket now in Brodart mylar protective (clear) cover. Extensive notes, bibliography, and index. Avenues of Faith documents how religion flourished in southern cities after the turn of the century and how a cadre of clergy and laity created a notably progressive religious culture in Richmond, the bastion of the Old South. Famous as the former capital of the Confederacy, Richmond emerges as a dynamic and growing industrial city invigorated by the social activism of its Protestants. By examining six mainline white denominations - Episcopalians, Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Disciples of Christ, and Lutherans - Samuel C. Shepherd Jr. emphasizes the extent to which the city fostered religious diversity, even as "blind spots" remained in regard to Catholics, African Americans, Mormons, and Jews. Shepherd explores such topics as evangelism, interdenominational cooperation, the temperance campaign, the Sunday school movement, the international peace initiatives, and the expanding role of lay people of both sexes. He also notes the community's widespread rejection of fundamentalism, a religious phenomenon almost automatically associated with the South, and shows how it nurtured social reform to combat a host of urban problems associated with public health, education, housing, women's suffrage, prohibition, children, and prisons. In lucid prose and with excellent use of primary sources, Shepherd delivers a fresh portrait of Richmond Protestants who embraced change and transformed their community, making it an active, progressive religious center of the New South. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 414 pages

3433 Sherman, John, et al. Trenton Falls, Picturesque and Descriptive
New York, NY N. Orr & Co. 1868 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Good with no dust jacket Illustrated by N. Orr
Brown cloth cover with gold Inlay illustration. Rubs and dented corners. Excellent engravings and history. We provide delivery tracking on US orders. Former owners name inscribed in pencil in front and dated 1874.Dr. Hall in his History of the Presbyterian Church in Trenton says that the Falls of the Delaware was not only the first, name given to that part of the river where Trenton was afterwards built, but was used for more than a century to denote the general locality. Mr. Raum, speaking in his History of Trenton, of the Dutch and Swedes who preceded the English in this country, referred to their fortifications on the Delaware, by them called the South River, near Gloucester in New Jersey, and also on the Hudson, or North River, in New York, 2 and remarked that the Yorkshire commissioners chose the purchase from the Assunpink, or Falls of the Delaware, to Rancocas Creek. THE growth of Trenton for some time after the settlement in 1679 appears to have been slow. It is stated in Woodward and Hageman’s History o f Burlington and Mercer Counties 168 that prior to 1700 no great progress was made in the settlement here; that about that time purchases began to be made from the original proprietors or those who had taken up the land; and that most of the old deeds for lands in this vicinity bear date from 1699 to 1710. ; Engravings, black and white photographs; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 96 pages

3451 Sibley, Celestine A Place Called Sweet Apple, Country Living and Southern Recipes
Garden City, NY Garden City: Doubleday, 1967, Garden City 1967 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket Illustrated by Ray Cruz Signed by Author
Signed by author. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. A Place Called Sweet Apple is your personal invitation to a cozy retreat in a very special spot.Sweet Apple-the very name evokes a rural charm. That's what Celestine Sibley discovered on her initial visit to the primitive log cabin built in 1844. And that's what she continued to find after many years living in the house, lovingly restores and filled with the memories of her own family's life there."How an old abandoned house can take hold of a reasonably sane woman's heart, fill her mind, lap up her energy and change her life is still something of a mystery to me," Sibley muses. By the time you have savored her tale of restoring the old house, Sweet Apple's charm will no longer be a mystery. The dilapidated ruin into which Sibley invested her heart and energy became a community project and Sibley and her family grew to love the colorful and interesting lifestyle of their neighborhood. This is far more, however, than a story about breathing new life into an old house and moving from the city to the country. It is a story of personal discovery and fulfillment laced with wry humor and good common sense. Sibley's vision of living and loving is so clear, so pure, that no reader can put down this book without feeling enriched. The sampling of Southern recipes that she has collected here are also certain to delight.; 1.11 x 9.13 x 6.57 Inches; Signed by Author

3465 Singer, P.E., Lawless, John Report of the Important Controversial Discussion between Mr. Pope and Mr. Maguire (Catholocism vs. Protestantism)
Dublin, Ireland Coyne, Tims, & Curry 1827 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
Leather over boards binding is heavily worn and scuffed. Leather spine has gold lettering that says "Pope and Maguire Discussion. Rear hinge at bottom of spine beginning to crack. THe title page? is handwritten and half of it is missing. It says something about Dublin, 1852 which could mean it is not a title page but a tipped in page after publication. This is suspicioned as there is an original handwritten certification by Pope and Maguire, hand dated 1827 that follows the Introductory statement pages. There is a rubber stamp that says "The Library The Abby Galway" inside cover and on endpaper. No card or other library markings or damage as usually found in xlib books. The first full page of print is the Introductory Statement talking about how the debate was to be carried out, the limiting points of each person. Mr. Pope: 1st Infallibility, 2nd Purgatory and 3rd Transubstantiation. Mr. Maguire: 1st, The divine right of private judgement to promice upon the authenticity, integrity, and canonicity of Scripture and to determine its meaning in articles of faith, 2- The Justification of the Reformation, 3rd- The Protestant Churches do not possess that unity which forms the distincitive mark of the true Church of Christ. The introductory statement also set out other articles of agreement made the 11th of April 1827 at the home of Mr. Tims, in Graftonstreet attended by both debaters. The Chair representing the Protestant was Admiral Oliver and the Roman Catholic was Daniel O'Connell, Esq. It was decided to hold the debate at the Lecture-Room of the Dublin Institution, Sackville street for the six day debate. The Text for the full debate is complete and has soiling and yellowing to the pages due to age. A rare and special addition to the book is the handwritten and hand signed certifications by both Mr. Maguire and Mr. Pope done on June 14, 1827 as to the authenticity of the debate published by Coyne, Tims, & Curry that it "is alone authentic". Both certifications and signatures are hand signed and attested by James Sheridan and Philip Hardy. It appears that the edges have been trimmed as they are not unevenly cut, but smooth, and that some of the marginial notations of a former owner are not fully legible due to the cut.The discussion is complete and ends on page 370 which has about a 1/8th portion of the page missing not detrimental to the text. This is a rare and perhaps unique copy of this debate, especially with the original signatures of Messrs. Pope, Maguire, Sheridan and Hardy. Rare.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 370 pages; Signed by Associated

Point Blank 2006 0809550911 First Edition; Various Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket Signed by Author
Signed by Author on Title Page. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book. "Because Lydia didn't have arms or legs, she shelled out three thousand bucks to a washed up middleweight named Cap to give her ex-husband the beating of his life." But the beating turns to murder, and the murder into lust and desperation between Lydia and an underworld clean-up man. Meanwhile, overgrown frat boy car thieves take up cop killing as a side hobby. When these paths cross, a horror show of violence unfolds as they all slide into a hell of their own design, surrounded by the neon and noise of the casino strip on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Violent, vivid, life at hyper-speed. This debut novel from the editor of Plots with Guns is a noir nightmare that asks how much is too much in a relationship, and what is the cost of leaving? Ken Bruen calls it "the darkest song I've ever read". May have dust spotting on top edge from shelf storage over time.; 1 x 8.6 x 5.6 Inches; 184 pages; Signed by Author

3496 Smith, R. Harris OSS The Secret History of America's First Central Intelligence Agency
University of California Press 1972 0520020235 First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Looks almost new. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. “The best book about America’s first modern secret service.” Washington Post Book World In the months before World War II, FDR prepared the country for conflict with Germany and Japan by reshuffling various government agencies to create the Office of Strategic Services--America’s first intelligence agency and the direct precursor to the CIA. When he charged William (“Wild Bill”) Donovan, a successful Wall Street lawyer and Wilkie Republican, to head up the office, the die was set for some of the most fantastic and fascinating operations the U.S. government has ever conducted. Author Richard Harris Smith, himself an ex-CIA hand, documents the controversial agency from its conception as a spin-off of the Office of the Coordinator for Information to its demise under Harry Truman and reconfiguration as the CIA. During his tenure, Donovan oversaw a chaotic cast of some ten thousand agents drawn from the most conservative financial scions to the country’s most idealistic New Deal true believers. Together they usurped the roles of government agencies both foreign and domestic, concocted unbelievably complicated conspiracies, and fought the good fight against the Axis powers of Germany and Japan. For example, when OSS operatives stole vital military codebooks from the Japanese embassy in Portugal, the operation was considered a success. But the success turned into a flop as the Japanese discovered what had happened, and hastily changed a code that had already been decrypted by the U.S. Navy. Colorful personalities and truly priceless anecdotes abound in what may arguably be called the most authoritative work on the subject.; 1.6 x 9 x 5.9 Inches; 458 pages

3500 Smith, Sidney Sidney Smith, 8 x 10 Black and White Photo signed
c1917 First Edition; First Impression Non-Book Very Good with no dust jacket Signed by Author
This is an 8 x 10 Photo of Sidney Smith under a statue of Andy Gump holding his two dogs. (Original not a reproduction) The photo has his inscription on face that says " To John G. Kidd, Yours for Fun. Sidney Smith." Robert Sidney Smith was the creator of the great American family epic 'The Gumps'. Smith was already almost forty years old when the first panel of this strip was published, in 1917. In 1908, he published his first comic, 'Buck Nix'. When he got hired by the Chicago Tribune the name changed to 'Old Doc Yak'. In 1919, Smith was forced to abandon this strip due to the immense popularity of 'The Gumps', which had greatly boosted the Tribune's circulation. The Gump family brought Smith fame and riches, which he spent on several houses and cars. The depression of the 1930s did not affect him, for he was able to sign a new contract with the Tribune that paid him a million dollars over the next three years, plus a brand new Rolls Royce as a bonus. Driving home after having closed the deal, Sidney Smith collided with another car and was killed instantly. After that 'The Gumps' were taken over by Gus Edson. The Gumps inspired Amos 'n' Andy and thus had a huge influence on the introduction of radio serial continuity and radio-television situation comedies, as detailed by broadcast historian Elizabeth McLeod in the "Andy Gump to Andy Brown" section of her popular culture essay, "Amos 'n' Andy—In Person" and her book, The Original Amos 'n' Andy: Freeman Gosden, Charles Correll, and the 1928–43 Radio Serial (McFarland, 2005). Mainly due to the research of McLeod, Sidney Smith is now regarded as a seminal figure in 20th-century popular culture. Extremely Rare! We provide delivery tracking on US orders.
