2311 Mclaughlin, Jack Jefferson and Monticello The Biography of a Builder
Henry Holt and Co. 1988 0805004823 First Edition; Various Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket Signed by Author
Author inscribed and signed bookplate. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book. This book, a National Book Award nominee in 1988, is the life of Thomas Jefferson as seen through the prism of his love affair with Monticello. For over half a century, it was his consuming passion, his most serious amusement. With a sure command of sources and skilled intuitive understanding of Jefferson, McLaughlin crafts and uncommon portrait of builder and building alike. En route he tells us much about life in Virginia; about Monticello’s craftsmen and how they worked their materials; about slavery, class, and family; and, above all, about the multiplicity of domestic concerns that preoccupied this complex man. It is and engaging and incisive look at the eighteenth-century mind: systematic, rational, and curious, but also playful, comfort-loving, and amusing. Ultimately, it provides readers with great insight into daily life in Colonial and Federal America. ; 1.3 x 8.8 x 6.1 Inches; 289 pages; Signed by Author

2323 McPherson, Aimee Semple The Personal Testamony of Aimee Semple McPherson
Los Angeles, CA Foursquare Publications Inc. 1973 First Edition; Reprint Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
Rare reprint booklet has photo of author on front. This booklet is protected by an archival quality sleeve to maintain present condition. Aimee Semple McPherson (October 9, 1890 – September 27, 1944), also known as Sister Aimee or simply Sister, was a Canadian-American Pentecostal evangelist and media celebrity in the 1920s and 1930s.[1] She founded the Foursquare Church. McPherson has been noted as a pioneer in the use of modern media, as she used radio to draw on the growing appeal of popular entertainment in North America and incorporated other forms into her weekly sermons at Angelus Temple.[2]In her time she was the most publicized Christian evangelist, surpassing Billy Sunday and her other predecessors.[3][4] She conducted public faith healing demonstrations before large crowds; testimonies conveyed tens of thousands of people healed.[5][6] McPherson's articulation of the United States as a nation founded and sustained by divine inspiration continues to be echoed by many pastors in churches today.News coverage sensationalized her misfortunes with family and church members; particularly inflaming accusations she had fabricated her reported kidnapping, turning it into a national spectacle.[7] McPherson's preaching style, extensive charity work and ecumenical contributions were a major influence to Charismatic Christianity in the 20th century. Pittsburg, PA John Murphy & Co. 1859 First Thus; First Impression Hardcover Fair with no dust jacket
Books spine has severe damage, hinges cracking, contents clean. We provide delivery tracking on US orders. " ohn Milner (1752–1826) was an English Roman Catholic bishop and controversialist who served as the Vicar Apostolic of the Midland District from 1803 to 1826. His language was as harsh as ever, and unbecoming in a bishop, until at length an appeal was made to Rome, and Cardinal Fontana, who was then Prefect of Propaganda, forbade him to write in it anymore. During the last years of his life Milner withdrew to a great extent from public politics. He ceased to act on behalf of the Irish bishops, and though he did not hold any intercourse with the other vicars Apostolic, he ceased to write against them. He devoted himself to literary work. In 1818 his End of Controversy, perhaps the best known of all his books, at length appeared, and it was followed by a war of pamphlets and replies which went on for several years. Feeling his health failing, he applied for a coadjutor, and Rev. Thomas Walsh, President of Oscott College, was appointed. He was consecrated in 1825 when all the bishops of England met, and a reconciliation was effected. Milner survived less than a year, his death taking place at his house at Wolverhampton on 19 April 1826. (Wikipedia); 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 338 pages;
