Tallinn, Estonia EEsti Riiklik Kirhastus 1964 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Written in Estonian. Poetry. Beautiful woodcuts. Juhan Liiv (30 April [O.S. 18 April] 1864 in Allatzkiwwi – 1 December [O.S. 18 November] 1913) in Werbach-Kosse) is one of Estonia's most famous poets.Liiv was born into an extremely poor family in the village of Allatzkiwwi, Governorate of Livonia, Russian Empire. Despite their poverty, Liiv's parents sent him to Dorpat (present-day Tartu) to study at the Hugo Treffner Gymnasium. Illness forced Liiv to leave school and return home, where he wrote poetry and occasional columns for the Olevik newspaper. His poetry starkly contrasted that of his contemporaries, and was therefore largely ignored.; Wood block prints; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 66 pages

2107 Lillie, Jared Jared Lillie, 1776, His Book
None listed Jared Lillie 1776 First Edition; First Impression Ephemera Good with No dust jacket as issued
This handwritten paper dated 1776 looks to be a journal/diary of author. Strings holding text block. There seems to be a missing page and two pages are missing half pages. This is a personal diarylike journal that contains handwritten notes of author in ink with poems, Ben Franklin obituary, Bill of Parcel, an Epitaph, List of children with birth dates from 1785 to 1806. (assumed to be Jared's children but no wife's name given). At the bottom of each page is written "Jared Lillie's book 1776" The handwriting is excellent and there are handwritten "decorations" throughout. Many of the pages have "ink blotting" that makes some pages hard to read. There are also arithmetic computations/calculations on a few pages. Research shows a Jared Lillie born March 27, 1759 to a Elisha and Hulda (Tilden) Lillie from Windham, Ct. This may be the same Jared as one of the children listed in the Journal is Elisha which would be Jared's father's name. There is no listing of a city, state or location in the journal so Windham, Ct could be correct or incorrect. This is an excellent example of a "period" piece of early Americana ephemera dated the year 1776. See scan of cover. Book now in archival sleeve to protect condition. Rare, unique. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 12 pages

2112 Lincoln, Joseph Queer Judson
Bristol, Ct D. Appleton 1925 First Edition; Various Hardcover Good in Good dust jacket Signed by Author
Author signed "Sincerely yours, Joseph C. Lincoln". Book and dust show wear. Hinges weak. Scarce copy with dust that has chips but has been covered with archival sleeve. Joseph Crosby Lincoln (February 13, 1870 – March 10, 1944) was an American author of novels, poems, and short stories, many set in a fictionalized Cape Cod. Lincoln's work frequently appeared in popular magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post and The Delineator. Lincoln was aware of contemporary naturalist writers, such as Frank Norris and Theodore Dreiser, who used American literature to plumb the depths of human nature, but he rejected this literary exercise. Lincoln claimed that he was satisfied "spinning yarns" that made readers feel good about themselves and their neighbors. Two of his stories have been adapted to film.Lincoln was born in Brewster, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, and his mother moved the family to Chelsea, Massachusetts, a manufacturing city outside Boston, after the death of his father. Lincoln's literary career celebrating "old Cape Cod" can partly be seen as an attempt to return to an Eden from which he had been driven by family tragedy. Lincoln died in 1944, at the age of 73, in Winter Park, Florida; 7.40 X 5.30 X 1.20 inches; 362 pages; Signed by Author

2113 Lincoln, Joseph C. Head Tide
New York D. Appleton & Company 1932 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Fair dust jacket
Blue cover has minor spotting. Dust has chips and tears with both front and back flap repaired with tape but now in brodart protective cover. Has former owners book plate in front. JOSEPH C. LINCOLN, author of Head Tide an Appleton publication, was born in Brewster, Mass,, on Feb. 13, 1870. Brewster is a typical Cape Cod town, settled by the Pilgrims soon after the landing at Plymouth, and was named for Elder Brewster. But Mr. Lincoln's Cape Cod, as portrayed in his stories, couldn't be found on any map. "His" Cape Cod is not bounded by stilted lines of latitude nor formal lines of longitude. If it suits the purpose of his story to locate an inlet where nature has built promontory, to erect a village in place of woods and marshes, the author has "never hesitated to do so." "Head Tide" is, like the thirty-one volumes which have preceded it in the twenty-eight years since Lincoln's first novel, "Cap'n Eri," was published [1904], about a Cape Cod community, and it is, like most of the later novels, the story of the conflict between an "import" and the natives. "Head Tide" is a good, man sized story of a good man sized job faced with courage. By this time readers are not so completely bedazzled by the quaintness of Mr. Lincoln's characters as they were at first, for they have become accustomed after thirty-one volumes to the local dialect which drove the readers of "Cap'n Eri " into spasms of glee. Scarce if not Rare with dust jacket. ; 7.30 X 5.10 X 1.30 inches

2114 Lindsey USA Re, LTC Fred S. Secret Green Beret Commandos In Cambodia A Memorial History of MACVSOG's Command and Control Detachment South And Its Air Partners, Republic of Vietnam, 19671972
AuthorHouse 2012 1477273085 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued Signed by Author
Inscribed and signed by author for seller at a gun show in Louisville, Ky, 2014. We could call this book Special Operations Recon Mission Impossible. A small group of highly trained, resourceful US Special Forces (SF) men is asked to go in teams behind the enemy lines to gather intelligence on the North Vietnamese Army units that had infiltrated through Laos and Cambodia down the Ho Chi Minh trails to their secret bases inside the Cambodian border west of South Vietnam. The covert reconnaissance teams, of only two or three SF men with four or five experienced indigenous mercenaries each, were tasked to go into enemy target areas by foot or helicopter insertion. They could be 15 kilometers beyond any other friendly forces, with no artillery support. In sterile uniforms with no insignia or identification, if they were killed or captured, their government would deny their military connection. The enemy had placed a price on their heads and had spies in their Top Secret headquarters known as SOG. SOG had three identical recon ground units along the border areas. This book tells the history of Command and Control Detachment South (CCS) The CCS volunteer warriors and its Air Partners - the Army and Air Force helicopter transport and gunship crews who lived and fought together and sometimes died together. This is the first published history of CCS as compiled by its last living commander, some forty years after they were disbanded. It tells of the struggles and intrigue involved in SOG's development as the modernday legacy of our modern Special Operations Commands. Forbidden to tell of their experiences for over twenty years; their After Action Reports destroyed even before they were declassified - surviving veterans team together to tell how Recon men wounded averaged 100 percent; and SOG became the most highly decorated unit in Vietnam and all were awarded the Presidential Unit. Very Rare.; CCS; Photographs and illustrations; 11 X 8.20 X 1.60 inches; 740 pages; Signed by Author

Book and dust in good to very good condition. "The Coastwatchers, also known as the Coast Watch Organisation, Combined Field Intelligence Service or Section C, Allied Intelligence Bureau, were Allied military intelligence operatives stationed on remote Pacific islands during World War II to observe enemy movements and rescue stranded Allied personnel. They played a significant role in the Pacific Ocean theatre and South West Pacific theatre, particularly as an early warning network during the Guadalcanal campaign. In early November 1942, two coastwatchers named Read and Mason on Bougainville Island radioed early warnings to the United States Navy about Japanese warship and air movements (citing the numbers, type, and speed of enemy units) preparing to attack the US Forces in the Solomon Islands. Admiral William Halsey, Jr. later said that the two men had saved Guadalcanal because their reports allowed US forces to launch aircraft in time to engage the attackers." 2169 Lord, Walter Incredible Victory by Walter Lord
Harper & Row 1967 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Good dust jacket
Black cloth with gold print. Dust shoews wear and is price clipped. Copyright 1967. The Battle of Midway was a decisive naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II which occurred between 4 and 7 June 1942, only six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea. he Japanese public and much of the military command structure were kept in the dark about the extent of the defeat: Japanese news announced a great victory. Only Emperor Hirohito and the highest Navy command personnel were accurately informed of the carrier and pilot losses. Consequently, even the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) continued to believe, for at least a short time, that the fleet was in good condition. The Battle of Midway has often been called "the turning point of the Pacific". (wiki); 1967-06-05; Photographs, Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 331 pages

Cambridge University Press 1999 052163976X First Edition; First Printing Paperback Very Good
Starting with the idea of an event and finishing with a description of the standard big-bang model of the Universe, this textbook provides a clear, concise and up-to-date introduction to the theory of general relativity, suitable for final-year undergraduate mathematics or physics students. Throughout, the emphasis is on the geometric structure of spacetime, rather than the traditional coordinate-dependent approach. This allows the theory to be pared down and presented in its simplest and most elegant form. Topics covered include flat spacetime (special relativity), Maxwell fields, the energy-momentum tensor, spacetime curvature and gravity, Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes, black holes and singularities, and cosmology. 2190 Lurting, Thomas The Fighting Sailor turned Peaceable Chirstian: manifested in the Convincement and Conversion of Thomas Lurting with a short relation of many great dangers, and wonderful deliverances, he met
Leeds, England Davies and Booth 1816 Later Printing; First Impression Ephemera Very Good with no dust jacket
Uneven cut paper has been rebound using beautiful marbled paper boards, gold on black title, Parchment end papers with buffered and restored text block. Very handsome presentation of the 1816 printing. There is foxing to the original pages. The recent pirate activities on the horn of Africa have sparked interest in a phenomenon which in the years of yore characterised the high seas i.e. hostage taking. Combating this ill is the primary objective of the present treatise. Through his autobiographical narrative, The Fighting Sailor Turn'd Peaceable Christian, Thomas Lurting (1632-1713) distinguishes himself as one of the emblematic defendants of the early Quaker ideals for International Peace. In this treatise Lurting takes the fight for these ideals to the maritime scene. Most of the narrative takes place on board the Bristol Frigot, ship on board of which he was convinced. Despite staunch opposition facing the rise of Quakerism in the maritime milieu, which at the time was characterised by the spirit of belligerence, the determination of Quakers to die for their convictions, their pacific resistance ended up appealing to many a seaman who became convinced also. Numerous warring and fighting scenes constitute the ingredients for Lurting's plot development. And most especially the " ... True Account of George Pattison's Being Taken by the Turks; and How Redeemed by ..., Without Bloodshed, Putting the Turks on Shoar in their Own Country ..." Lurting makes of this episode the turning point around which he articulates his spiritual journey to illustrate the very Quaker ideal for an everlasting universal brotherhood and pacifism. Thomas Lurting was born in 1632, probably in Ireland. But he spent his childhood in London where at the age of fourteen he was impressed and forcefully taken to war in Ireland where he spent roughly two years. Upon his return to London, he was turned over into the Bristol Frigot, one of the war vessels belonging to Admiral Blake's fleet. On board this same ship he became convinced of the evils of war and decided to quit warring for the merchant service. He was however impressed many a times into the navy. He published his spiritual autobiography, The Fighting Sailor Turn'd Peaceable Christian. in 1710. Three years later, he passed away on the 30th March 1713, at the age of 81 in London and was laid to rest at Burmondsey. There is also an account of Lurting's mate George Pattison being taken by the Turks in 1663. Rare imprint.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 32 pages
