1803 Jones, Augustine Moses Brown A Sketch
The Rhode Island Printing Company 1892 First Edition; Various Paperback Good with No dust jacket as issued
Tan cover with brown print. Some chipping around edges of cover. Contents clean. Moses Brown (September 23, 1738 – September 6, 1836) was a co-founder of Brown University and a New England abolitionist and industrialist, who funded the design and construction of some of the first factory houses for spinning machines during the American industrial revolution, including Slater Mill. rown was the son of James Brown II and Hope Power Brown and grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the grandson of Baptist minister James Brown (1666-1732), and his father was a prosperous merchant. His father died in 1739, and Moses was raised in the family of his uncle Obadiah Brown who was primarily responsible for running the firm’s spermaceti works. The firm was also active in distilling rum, owned an iron furnace, and took part in a wide variety of merchant activities including sponsoring the ill-fated and notorious voyage of the slave ship Sally in 1764. Following Obadiah Brown's death in 1762, Moses Brown served as executor of his estate. Shares in the farming and shipping business were divided between Moses Brown and his three brothers, Nicholas, Joseph, and John; it was renamed as Nicholas Brown & Co. The brothers were co-founders of the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations to Providence. The family was active in the Baptist community of Providence and were descendants of Chad Brown (c. 1600-1650), a Baptist minister who co-founded Providence. Stackpole Books 2000 0811715329 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover.16-page b/w photo section 5 maps 6 x 9 "Confederate Corsair: The Life of Lt. Charles W. "Savez" Read is must reading for anyone savoring naval warfare and tales of derring-do. Read has long merited a biography, and Robert A. Jones has met and mastered the challenge in an exemplary manner that readers will applaud." -Edwin C. Bearss Historian Emeritus, National Park Service Lieutenant Charles W. "Savez" Read's life was one of swashbuckling adventure and dazzling escapes. Yet very little has been known about him until recently. Robert A. Jones has tracked down all available sources on this Confederate privateer-including unpublished material from Read's grandchildren-and written an exciting biography that reveals the impact of naval power on the Civil War. For example, while the North's navy projected its force at will, the South chose hit-and-run tactics that slowly bled the North's resources, as many of Read's exploits will show. Robert A. Jones holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering and has been employed by the Department of the Navy for 33 years. He provided historical background research for a 1970 proposal to the Smithsonian Institution for the salvage of the USS Tecumseh and recently published an article on the salvage of the CSS Virginia.; 0.98 x 9.26 x 6.2 Inches; 226 pages

Slight Foxing othewise fine condition. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. Scarce. Sergeant Major John Champe (ca. 1752– 30 September 1798) was a Revolutionary War senior enlisted soldier in the Continental Army who became a double agent in a failed attempt to capture the American traitor General Benedict Arnold (1741-1801). Champe enlisted in the Virginia Cavalry from Loudoun County in 1776 and was made sergeant major in "Lee's Legion", a unit commanded by (then Major) Henry Lee III, later and better known as Colonel "Light-horse Harry" Lee (and father of Gen. Robert E. Lee). Champe's family was said to be well known to Major Lee. A plan was formulated to kidnap the defecting General Benedict Arnold and bring him back to American lines to face court martial. in 1780 Champe "defected" to the British side where he was introduced to Arnold and soon gathered intelligence that established that there were no other American generals involved with Arnold. Champe formulated a plot to capture Arnold on his regular evening stroll, but before he could act the entire British unit, Champe included, embarked in New York on the Virginia Campaign of 1780-81. Thus, the whole endeavor had to be called off. ; Photograph ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 68 pages;

1858 Kelso, William M. Kingsmill Plantations, 1619-1800 Archaeology of Country Life in Colonial Virginia
Academic Pr 1984 0124034802 First Edition; Various Hardcover Near Fine with no dust jacket Signed by Author
Author signed bookplate. Book looks new. In 1971 William Kelso happened almost by chance on an archaeological find that would open a new door on the rural history of colonial Tidewater Virginia. Erosion had revealed a brick well shaft in a cliff on the James River; above this was an earthen fort and, a bit farther downriver, the remains of a plantation manor. These would be the first of many intriguing discoveries to be made in the area known as Kingsmill. Though the land's owners agreed to cooperate with, and even fund, an archaeological study of the area, the excavation schedule would have to keep one step ahead of the work on a major residential development. For centuries, time had stood still in Kingsmill; now the clock was suddenly ticking.

'Kingsmill Plantations,' Kelso's first-hand account of a great feat of rescue archaeology, covers a three-year period and the excavation of 15 separate sites. The various properties dated as far back as 1619 -- placing them among the earliest of American settlements -- and continued up through the 18th century. Because the division of labor on the Kingsmill plantations was typical of the era, the settlement could provide an invaluable microcosmic view of colonial Virginia. Meticulous study of the structures and their surroundings -- including faunal analyses and inventories of entire households -- allowed Kelso and his colleagues to construct a remarkably detailed picture of life in Kingsmill over the course of nearly 200 years.

At once scholarly and highly readable, 'Kingsmill Plantations' speaks to both expert and amateur. An extensive collection of illustrations -- including maps, diagrams, and contemporary and archival photographs -- makes the narrative especially vivid. ; Studies in Historical Archaeology; 0.75 x 9.75 x 8 Inches; 236 pages; Signed by Author

The University of North Carolina Press 1997 1882886054 First Edition Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket Signed by Author
Author signed bookplate. In telling the story of Thomas Jefferson, the grounds at Monticello, and the many people, enslaved and free, who worked on the plantation, William Kelso's landmark work augments the written record of life there. Archeological excavations show that many of Jefferson's idealized projects were realized in very different form. In particular, the book contains significant new information about Mulberry Row, a line of workshops and dwellings where most of the plantation's industries were located. The wealth of material objects that Kelso's team unearthed form a fascinating and palpable link to the past. ; Monticello Monograph Series; 0.5 x 10 x 6.9 Inches; 136 pages; Signed by Author

1900 King, W. Nephew. STORY OF THE WAR OF 1898.
Peter Fenelon Collier. 1898 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Fair with no dust jacket
Large book with many black and white plates and color plates of the war. Cover is worn and soiled and some pages have foxing. Scarce first edition. Revolts against Spanish rule had been endemic for decades in Cuba and were closely watched by Americans. There had been war scares before, as in the Virginius Affair in 1873. By 1897–98, American public opinion grew angrier at reports of Spanish atrocities in Cuba. After the mysterious sinking of the American battleship Maine in Havana harbor, political pressures from the Democratic Party pushed the administration of Republican President William McKinley into a war he had wished to avoid.[8] Compromise proved impossible, resulting in the United States sending an ultimatum to Spain demanding it immediately surrender control of Cuba, which the Spanish rejected. First Madrid, then Washington, formally declared war.[9]; Photos and Illustrations; Large Folio
