1117 Fitzpatrick, Vincent H.L. Mencken
Continuum Intl Pub Group 1989 0826404197 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover As New in As New dust jacket
Book now in archival sleeve to protect condition. Over a career that spanned half of a century, Henry Louis Mencken published more than 10 million words. More than a million were written about him, many of which, Mencken liked to remark, were highly condemnatory. He was called, with good reason, the most powerful private citizen in America during the 1920s.This lively introduction to Mencken's life and work begins with a concise biographical portrait before proceeding to a consideration of the five major periods of the renowned Baltimorean's career: his literary apprenticeship; the growth of his national reputation; his fame and unprecedented popularity during the 1920s (when college students would flash the Paris-green cover of the American Mercury as a badge of sophistication); the decline of his reputation during the Depression; and his renewed popularity during the 1940s, with the publication of his autobiographical trilogy, the Days books. ; Literature and Life; 8.27 X 5.59 X 0.94 inches; 153 pages

1125 Flexner, James Thomas George Washington the forge of experience, 1732-1775.
Little, Brown 1965 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Stated first edition. "George Washington: The Forge of Experience (1732-1775)" covers roughly the first two-thirds of Washington's life, ending at the earliest stages of the American Revolution. The book was written with an often dry, now-dated style but provides a remarkably thorough account of Washington's formative years, tracing his steps in detail from early childhood into his mid-40s. This was a fascinating period for Washington, and you cannot help but feel slightly voyeuristic watching the strong-willed but often clumsy Washington evolve throughout his earliest military and social campaigns.It quickly becomes clear to the reader that the biography was scrupulously well-researched (no surprise, given Flexner's reputation), though it occasionally lapses into too much detail on seemingly trivial matters.Besides telling the story of Washington's early accomplishments and tribulations, this volume provides liberal doses of insightful analysis and interpretation, but without being haphazardly laced with the author's bias or opinion.Particularly interesting to me was the relationship between Washington and his mother (she could hardly be described as a supportive, empowering role model) and his often inept attempts to promote his burgeoning military career with the assistance of various Virginia politicians of the day. One hardly suspects a future president in the making when eavesdropping on Washington's awkward pleas, admonitions and diatribes with various colonial officials and military superiors.Overall, this volume is not intended as a fast-paced review of Washington's early life. For someone looking for an easy read-on-the-beach, this book may not be the right choice. But for the committed reader intent on getting to know Washington during his earliest and most formative years, this is a fascinating book.Read more2 people found this helpfulHelpfulComment Report abuseA customer4.0 out of 5 starsEverything you wanted to know about Washington pre-1775December 23, 1998Format: HardcoverThis is a remarkably complete account of Washington's early life, with a strong emphasis on his military experiences and domestic life . Pretty well written, Flexner is a tough but fair biographer who does not shrink from criticism yet does not sink to cheap-shot debunking. It is also a little old (33 years) and could possibly stand a revision, especially in light of more recent scholarship. Major complaints include a miserable selection of maps, a sometimes boring writing style, and a focus on the trivial, such as how much Washington paid for a carriage imported from England. Overall, the book is a decent, balanced summary of Washington's life and a good introduction to the other three volumes in the series which contain much more interesting subject matter.7 people found this helpfulHelpfulComment Report abuseCandace Scott3.0 out of 5 starsOutdated and ploddingJanuary 11, 2001Format: HardcoverThis is part of a four-volume series of George Washington's life and this is the initial installment, covering his early years. Flexner's narrative takes the reader up to the first shots of the Revolutionary War. Despite the fact that there is a plethora of interesting material on Washington's youth and young manhood, this book is singularly flat and written in a plodding style. It is generally reliable and accurate, but one yearns for a more enlightened and exciting presentation. This is the personification of how history is usually taught: in a manner not designed to capture the reader or the student.One strong point is that Flexner successfully presents a balanced portrait of Washington. Any bias from the author is thankfully masked from the reader. When Washington deserves criticism or censure, the author soberly dispenses it. Praise and plaudits are similarly given. If you are deeply interested in Washington's early years, this is an adequate and trustworthy source. But if you are merely dabbling in Washington and prefer a swifter narrative, then this is not a recommended selection.15 people found this helpfulHelpfulComment Report abuseNathan W. Casebolt4.0 out of 5 starsLimited but UsefulDecember 18, 2007Format: HardcoverWell-written, personable, somewhat condensed account of George Washington's first 43 years of life. Covers the period from Washington's birth to his appointment as the commander-in-chief of the (yet unformed) Continental Army. Flexner's criticism of Washington's youthful deficiencies in the French and Indian War are particularly cogent, while the author's obvious admiration of his subject dissipates any fear of authorial axe-grinding.3 people found this helpfulHelpfulComment Report abuseA. F. A. Rijt5.0 out of 5 starsVery interesting and pleant to readNovember 12, 2003Format: Audio CassetteI also own Freeman's solid and much recommended biography of Washington (which I haven't read yet). This biography looks more comprehensive but I certainly enjoyed reading Flexner's view on Washington. I think he succeeded in bringing to life this complicated person. The text is well-documented but also very interesting to read. It is more than a lot of facts about Washington; it is a very good interpretation of his life and work. I think this is what a biography should be: based on the facts and with references to notes and liteature but with an original interpretation. (reviewer) ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

University Alabama Press 2006 0817315195 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Looks new unread. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover.With the fall of Vicksburg to Union forces in mid-1863, the Federals began work to extend and consolidate their hold on the lower Mississippi Valley. As a part of this plan, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman set out from Vicksburg on February 3, 1864, with an army of some 25,000 infantry and a battalion of cavalry. They expected to be joined by another Union force moving south from Memphis and supported themselves off the land as they traveled due east across Mississippi. Sherman entered Meridian on February 14 and thoroughly destroyed its railroad facilities, munitions plants, and cotton stores, before returning to Vicksburg. Though not a particularly effective campaign in terms of enemy soldiers captured or killed, it offers a rich opportunity to observe how this large-scale raid presaged Shermans Atlanta and Carolina campaigns, revealing the transformation of Shermans strategic thinking. ; 1.1 x 9.1 x 6.1 Inches; 232 pages;

1158 Fox, John Jr. Hell Fer Sartain
New York Harper & Brothers Publishers 1900 Second Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket Signed by Author
This looks to be a presentation copy. Author wrote (some words not sure of transposition due to handwriting) "Rookwood, Dec 18, 1900, To The Wishers of Hell Fer Sartain- the same- from the friends of John Fox, Jr... Being sure, meanwhile that she will never know it in any worse form" Rookwood may refer to a famous hunting dog Kennel near Lexington, Kentucky. Book is reddish-brown with green and gold gilt design on front. Top and bottom edge of spine somewhat freyed. Pages uneven cut. Hell Fer Sartin is "Hell for Certain" in southern dialect. Fox wrote at times in this dialect as if "talking southern". Born near Paris, Kentucky, on December 16, 1862, John Fox Jr. was the son of a schoolmaster in Kentucky's Bourbon County. He enjoyed the benefits of quality education in childhood and attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, before graduating from Harvard in 1883. Fox then worked as a journalist in New York City before returning to Kentucky in 1885. He died of pneumonia on July 8, 1919, and is buried in Paris, Kentucky. Putnam 1989 0399134700 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket Signed by Author
Inscribed by Author "Bill and Debbie, Hi. Dick Francis". Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book.Ex-jockey, Derek Franklin, inherits his brother's jewellery business, mistress and some shadowy business associates. When expensive diamonds go missing, his only hope of survival is to identify his brother's enemies. From the author of "The Edge" and "Odds Against".From the authors obit: Richard Stanley Francis, jockey and writer, born 31 October 1920; died 14 February 2010. Dick Francis, who has died aged 89, was a unique figure, a champion steeplechase jockey who, without any previous apparent literary bent, became an international bestselling writer, the author of 42 crime novels, selling more than 60m copies in 35 languages. Right from the start, with Dead Cert in 1962, the Dick Francis thriller showed a mastery of lean, witty genre prose reminiscent sometimes to the point of comic parody of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. It was an American style that many clever people in England had attempted to reproduce without much success, and it was a wonder how a barely educated former jump jockey was able to do the trick with such effortless ease. People said his highly educated wife wrote the books for him. It was a mystery that was never satisfactorily solved. However, After his wifes death in 2000, when no new crime novels appeared, it looked as if Mary might have written them. But then, six years later, Francis came out of retirement to produce Under Orders, which had all the old Francis flavour. The next year, 2007, he published Dead Heat, then Silks (2008) and Even Money (2009).The most dramatic incident in his racing career was also a mystery. In the Grand National at Aintree in 1956, his mount Devon Loch, the Queen Mother's horse trained by Peter Cazalet, had jumped all the fences and, well ahead, only 50 yards from the finish, without another horse near him, suddenly collapsed and was unable to continue. The plots (of Francis' books, too, ran to a formula. Some reviewers protested that racing could not be as crooked as depicted in the Francis novels, but real life (as in the case of the Shergar kidnapping) came in to prove how realistic his stories were. Born at Coedcanlas Farm in the Pembrokeshire village of Lawrenny, Francis came from a line of farming gentry and horsemen. His father was a show rider and manager of hunting stables, his grandfather a farmer and gentleman jockey. Uncles on both sides of his family were Masters of Foxhounds. The family home was a beautiful old farmhouse but it had neither gas nor electricity and was lit by candlelight. As well as the thrillers, he wrote his autobiography, The Sport of Queens (1957), and Lester (1986), a biography of Lester Piggott.. 1180 Fredrich, Raymond Nail Pullers
AuthorHouse 2005 1420874527 First Edition; Various Paperback As New with no dust jacket Signed by Author
As new. Inscribed on title page, "We must all pull together, Raymond P. Fredrich". This book will be enjoyed by "The Antique Tool Researcher, the Flea marketer, the Tool Collector Historian", and many others. The 39 pages of Patent information is very useful for that person looking for History of Patent Dates, Patent Numbers, or the Patentee. The Nail Puller does the same job as the claw on the hammer, but it does it differently. Mainly, this is about the Slide Hammer type of Nail Puller, and many variations of it. There was a time when each nail was forged by a Blacksmith . That made the nail more valuable than the wood it had been driven into. Wood was very plentiful in the mid-19th century. My book will show you examples of Square Nail Pullers that go back to 1849. If it became necessary to change your resident location, you might possibly take your house apart, just to get the nails. You might even burn your house down and pick up nails in the ashes. Herein contained are many examples of the Slide Hammer type of Nail Puller. From the stand point of History, there are many copies of Trade Magazine advertising, showing the advertisement and some times the cost of the tool, as far back as 1890. I have included a "Guide to Scarcity", which will help you determine the "Frequently Found" or the "Not Likely to be found" Nail Puller. Included are 252 copies of patent sketches taken from the original patents, giving the Patentee, (inventor and/or manufacturer) the patent date and patent number. There are more patents in the patent office, than nail pullers that were manufactured. Contained herein are about 60 pictures of more than 100 Nail Pullers in my collection, which are captioned to reflect points of interest. I was unable to find one of each Nail Puller ever produced, but here is a good representation of what I could find over a 5 year period . For the Researcher, included are 39 pages of index composed by Patentee, Patent Date, and Patent Number, which are cross referenced one to the other.; Illustrated; 0.9 x 10.8 x 8.2 Inches; 440 pages; Signed by Author
