This is a "Souvenir of a Dinner tendered to Meredith Nicholson by his Old Familiar Friends of Indiana on his departure for Paraguay, September 6, 1933" printed on opposit page from title page. " Meredith Nicholson (December 9, 1866 – December 22, 1947) was a best-selling author from Indiana, United States, a politician, and a diplomat. During the first quarter of the 20th century, Nicholson, along with Booth Tarkington, George Ade, and James Whitcomb Riley helped to create a Golden Age of literature in Indiana. Three of his books from that era were national bestsellers: The House of a Thousand Candles, The Port of Missing Men, A Hoosier Chronicle. In 1928, Nicholson entered Democratic party politics, and served for two years as a city councilman in Indianapolis. (probably from 1930's) Book now in archival sleeve to protect condition. WALTER PALMER [1865-1932]Known as the Poet Laureate, Walter Palmer was born in Prarie Center, IL in 1865. As a young man he was active in harness racing as a trainer, driver and handler on the then very prominent Illinois Valley Circuit. He wrote a great deal of poetry about the sport, including a book entitled HEART THROBS & HOOF BEATS. He also became a regular contributor to Horse Review. Many of the great horsemen and horses of his day - Pop Geers, Charles Dean, Hal Pointer, to mention a few - were subjects for his sentimental verses. He died in 1932.
