The Last Dollar or Uncle Tom's Cabin Inverted and The Pilgrim's Progress Exemplified, Morgan, John
166 Morgan, John The Last Dollar or Uncle Tom's Cabin Inverted and The Pilgrim's Progress Exemplified
Kansas City, MO Franklin Hudson Publishers c1896 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
No publication date on title page, but research of the Morgan papers at Marshall University puts it around 1896. Cover has log cabin on front, and has minor soiling. Contents clean with light browning due to age, has photos. This is a very interesting book written about the authors life, service in the Confederate Army of Virginia, loss of his brother at Fayetteville, W. Va. And his reflections on the Civil War as many as 20 years after. He was given a special pass to return home to see his dying sister after his grandfather, Col. J. M. H. Beale, wrote to him. One of his last comments in the book is "I do not believe it is in my nature to be anything but Southern and Democratic." John Morgan Sr. was probably born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, near the beginning of the nineteenth century. In 1832, he married Elizabeth Ann Beale, daughter of Colonel James Madison Hite Beale, and granddaughter of William Steenbergen, both wealthy landowners in Shenandoah County. Their son, John Morgan, Jr.(author of The Last Dollar), was born in 1840. They were also the parents of two other sons, James B. and William Steenbergen Morgan, and a daughter. In 1846, John and Elizabeth Morgan brought their family to a farm on the Kanawha River in what is now Putnam County, opposite the mouth of the Pocatalico River. During the Civil War, the three sons served in the Confederate Army: John Jr. was a member of Company A, 22nd Virginia Regiment; James was a captain the 36th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, and William, who was killed at Fayette Court House, (West) Virginia in 1862, was a member of Company A, 36th Regiment. The daughter died of consumption during the war. After the Civil War, John, Jr. and James returned to Putnam County and engaged in farming.John Morgan, Jr., was born i n 1840. On October 12, 1875, John Morgan, Jr., married Samantha Jane Atkeson, daughter of Thomas and Virginia Brown Atkeson. Samantha A. Morgan was born in Mason County, (West) Virginia, on January 27, 1843. She and John Morgan Jr. were the parents of four sons: John Morgan III, born August 1876; Thomas Atkeson, born April 15, 1878; Rembrandt, born June 19, 1880; and Albert Sidney, birth date unknown. The Morgan Family Papers 1831-1935 are contained in the Special Collections Department at Marshall University, Huntington, W. Va. 171 No Author Listed Calendar of transcripts including the annual report of the Department of archives and history (Virginia)
Richmond, VA Davis Bottom, Superintendent Public Printing 1905 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
Not a reprint but the original publication printed in 1905.Uncut pages.Very clean contents. Marbled end papers 1/4 leather spine and corners worn and cracked. A unique bookplate in front has the handwritten note that "This book belongs to Douglas Southall Freeman" as it came out of his personal library. Freeman was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War. His father was Walker Garland Freeman and his mother was Bettie Hamner. He did his undergraduate work at Richmond College where he joined the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. He received his Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins University at the age of 22.A long-time resident of Richmond, Virginia, Freeman served as editor of The Richmond News Leader from 1915 to 1949. However, it was his work as a historian and biographer that earned greatest recognition. He won Pulitzer Prizes for two of his books, his four-volume biography of Robert E. Lee, and his seven-volume biography of George Washington (a seventh volume First in Peace was written after Freeman's death by J. A. Carroll and M. W. Ashworth, two of his historical associates). He was also the author of the three-volume Lee's Lieutenants: A Study in Command.Freeman's treatments of the American Civil War are often cited as examples of the Lost Cause movement, emphasizing the glory and nobility of the Southern generals and the futility of their fight against the power of the North. While Freeman certainly does emphasize the nobility of Lee's character, he does not say that Lee made no mistakes, nor does he say that the North only won because of superior numbers. For instance, this passage shows Lee misjudging his real opponent, and also expresses admiration for Abraham Lincoln's character:[1] rare if not unique. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Ministry of Angels, No Author Listed
176 No Author Listed Ministry of Angels
Greensboro, NC The Apostolic Messenger Office 1880 First Edition; Various Paperback Good with no dust jacket
Grey cover with black lettering. Cover has been re-glued to contents. Paper is fragile due to age. Booklet now in archival sleeve to protect condition. Godbey’s contributions to holiness literature also included numerous small booklets which nourished the holiness people in sound doctrine and inoculated them against the ‘heresies’ which were sweeping across America in the late nineteenth century. These booklets were printed on cheap (high acid content) paper in order to make them affordable (usually ten cents each), and as a consequence, most of them exist today in a state of marked deterioration. Topics included expositions of holiness soteriology, critiques of “popular evangelism,” indictments of the “fallen churches” (especially Methodism), warnings against such ‘heresies’ as “Mormonism,” and devotional studies of the geography of “Bible lands.” However, the most prominent topic was the Second Coming of Christ. Godbey wrote numerous booklets concerning the “signs of the times,” expositions of dispensationalist chronology (outlining periods of history, the Rapture, the Tribulation Period, the Millennium, and the final judgment), and exhortations to be “robed and ready” with the experience of entire sanctification. These booklets contain an abundance of Godbey’s sermon illustrations–personal anecdotes, allusions to classical Greek mythology, references to rural life, and stories taken from religious biographies of such notable personalities as George Whitefield, John Wesley, Benjamin Abbott, and Charles G. Finney. These booklets provide today’s readers with snapshots of Godbey’s preaching style– homespun stories, rhetoric, pointed exhortations, allusions to classical literature–and provide a clear picture of a distinct personality. Like the rest of his publications, Godbey’s booklets were not polished productions; rather, they were transcriptions of his reminiscences, taken down by “amanuenses”–most of them students of God’s Bible School. Godbey had serious problems with his eyesight, and his handwriting was very difficult to decipher. He dictated his books and pamphlets from memory, and these publications represent a raw transcription of his personality and speaking style. Very rare. Paperback may indicate a booklet, phamplet, tract or book.
