Tan and black cover with gilt print. Some marginal notations from the former owner an Army Chaplain who may have used them for sermon notes. Condition otherwise like new. Here for the first time, encompassing the depth and breadth of their dedication and sacrifice, is their fascinating and uplifting story. Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr., is an alumni distinguished professor of history and the executive director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech. William C. Davis is professor of history and director of programs of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies. John Brinsfield is a retired army chaplain in Atlanta, Georgia. A Virginia Yankee in the Civil War The diaries of David Hunter Strother, Eby, Cecil
10 Eby, Cecil A Virginia Yankee in the Civil War The diaries of David Hunter Strother
The University of North Carolina Press 1961 0807808202 / 9780807808207 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Red cloth cover has plastic archival portective cover. Some browning to endpapers. Clean bright text, tight binding. Looks as if never read. The Civil War diaries of David Hunter Strother, known better to his contemporaries as "Porte Crayon," chronicle his three years of service in the Union army with the same cogency and eye for detail that made him one of the most popular writers and illustrators in America in his time. A Virginian strongly opposed to secession, Strother joined the Federal army as a civilian topographer in July of 1861 and was soon commissioned, rising eventually to the rank of brigadier general. He served under a succession of commanders, including Generals Patterson, Banks, Pope, and McClellan, winning their respect as well as their confidence. First published by UNC Press in 1961, A Virginia Yankee in the Civil War is a fascinating firsthand record of the conflict and of the divided loyalties it produced that is further enlivened by Strother's remarkable humor and insight. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 294 pages

Winter War, The Soviet Attack on Finland, 1939-1940, Engle, Eloise & Lauri Paananen
11 Engle, Eloise & Lauri Paananen Winter War, The Soviet Attack on Finland, 1939-1940
Stackpole Books 1992 0811724336 / 9780811724333 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued Illustrated by Caroline Miller
Paperback edition of Engle and Paananen's authoritative account of the Russo-Finnish Winter War. The Winter War was a military conflict between the Soviet Union and Finland in 1939–1940. It began with the Soviet invasion of Finland on 30 November 1939 (three months after the outbreak of World War II), and ended with the Moscow Peace Treaty on 13 March 1940. The League of Nations deemed the attack illegal and expelled the Soviet Union from the League on 14 December 1939. The Soviets possessed more than three times as many soldiers as the Finns, thirty times as many aircraft, and a hundred times as many tanks. The Red Army, however, had been crippled by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin's Great Purge of 1937. With more than 30,000 of its officers executed or imprisoned, including most of those of the highest ranks, the Red Army in 1939 had many inexperienced senior and mid-level officers.[43][44] Because of these factors, and high morale in the Finnish forces, Finland repelled Soviet attacks for several months, much longer than the Soviets expected. An excellent read.; Stackpole Military History Series; 8.82 X 6.10 X 0.61 inches; 192 pages

University Alabama Press 2006 0817315195 / 9780817315191 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Looks new unread. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover.With the fall of Vicksburg to Union forces in mid-1863, the Federals began work to extend and consolidate their hold on the lower Mississippi Valley. As a part of this plan, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman set out from Vicksburg on February 3, 1864, with an army of some 25,000 infantry and a battalion of cavalry. They expected to be joined by another Union force moving south from Memphis and supported themselves off the land as they traveled due east across Mississippi. Sherman entered Meridian on February 14 and thoroughly destroyed its railroad facilities, munitions plants, and cotton stores, before returning to Vicksburg. Though not a particularly effective campaign in terms of enemy soldiers captured or killed, it offers a rich opportunity to observe how this large-scale raid presaged Sherman’s Atlanta and Carolina campaigns, revealing the transformation of Sherman’s strategic thinking. ; 1.1 x 9.1 x 6.1 Inches; 232 pages;

Book is in like new condition. Black hardboards with red cloth spine; silver lettering on spine; corners sharp and square. Textblock clean, tight, square, unmarked. Dust is like new with original price on flap. Dust in archival cover. TATYANA TOLSTAYA the Russian novelist had this to say about Gorbachev " By gently pushing open the gates of reform, he unleashed a democratic flood that deluged the Soviet universe and washed away the cold war..... No single approach — and there have been many — can explain Gorbachev. Perhaps the holy fools with their metaphysical scenario were right when they whispered that he was marked and that seven years were given to him to transform Russia in the name of her as yet invisible but inevitable salvation and renaissance." Gorbachev met his wife, Raisa Titarenko, daughter of a Ukrainian railway engineer, at Moscow State University. They married in September 1953 and moved to Stavropol upon graduation. She gave birth to their only child, daughter Irina Mikhailovna Virganskaya, in 1957. Raisa Gorbacheva died of leukemia in 1999. It is in as new condition and is kept in a handmade custom box. Forward by Martin McCauley.Russians feel that credit should be given to Gorbachev and not Regan for the distruction of the the "Berlin Wall". Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev born 2 March 1931) was the seventh and last General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, serving from 1985 until 1991, and the last head of state of the USSR, serving from 1988 until its collapse in 1991. He was the only Soviet leader to have been born after the October Revolution of 1917. Gorbachev was born in Stavropol Krai into a peasant family, and in his teens operated combine harvesters on collective farms. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1955 with a degree in law. In 1970, he was appointed the First Party Secretary of the Stavropol Kraikom, First Secretary to the Supreme Soviet in 1974, and appointed a member of the Politburo in 1979. Gorbachev was elected General Secretary by the Politburo in 1985. Gorbachev's attempts at reform as well as summit conferences with United States President Ronald Reagan and his reorientation of Soviet strategic aims contributed to the end of the Cold War, ended the political supremacy of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. His wife Raisa Titarenko died in 1999 of leukemia. As of 2017 Mr. Gorbachev is 86 years old. Dust jacket now in Brodart mylar protective (clear) cover.
