The Bystander Fragments from France, Vol 5, Bairnsfather, Captain Bruce
1 Bairnsfather, Captain Bruce The Bystander Fragments from France, Vol 5
London, England The Bystander c 1917 First Edition; First Impression paperback Good with no dust jacket Illustrated by Author
Color inset on front cover. Cover is not detached from staples but both front and back are there. Contents clean with great illustrations. Bruce Bairnsfather, the son of Thomas Bairnsfather and Amelia Every, was born in Muree, India, in 1888. Bruce's father was a Lieutenant in the Bengal Infantry. After attending schools in India and Stratford-upon-Avon, Bruce joined the British Army. Bairnsfather found army life boring and left the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and enrolled as an art student at the Hassall School of Art. After completing his training he produced advertising posters for products such as Lipton Tea, Players's Tobacco and Flowers Beer. On the outbreak of the First World War Bairnsfather rejoined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and within a couple of weeks had been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. After the Battle of Mons the British Army was desperately short of trained soldiers and Bairnsfather was quickly rushed to the Western Front where he served with people such as Captain Bernard Montgomery and Lieutenant A. A. Milne. Bairnsfather, who was put in charge of a Maxim Machine-Gun section, was shocked by trench-life and even refused to take leave, fearing that once he left, he would find it too difficult to return. During the Christmas of 1914, Bairnsfather came close to being court-martialed after joining German soldiers in what later became known as the Christmas Truce. While on the Western Front, Bairnsfather drew pictures of trench life and in 1915 The Bystander magazine began publishing his drawings. Bairnsfather's work was extremely popular with the soldiers in the trenches and this helped sales of the magazine. This book is protected by an archival quality sleeve to maintain present condition. Scarce. ; Vol. 5; Illustrations; Oblong 4to 11" - 13; 32 pages

The battle of Point Pleasant; an address by Landon C. Bell, Bell, Landon Covington
2 Bell, Landon Covington The battle of Point Pleasant; an address by Landon C. Bell
Bedford, Va The Peaks of Otter Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution 1931 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
Paperback imprint of this famous address. Stored in an archival envelope with a hardside folder. Excellent condition. The Battle of Point Pleasant — known as the Battle of Kanawha in some older accounts — was the only major action of Dunmore's War. It was fought on October 10, 1774, primarily between Virginia militia and Indians from the Shawnee and Mingo tribes. Along the Ohio River near modern Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Indians under the Shawnee Chief Cornstalk attacked Virginia militia under Colonel Andrew Lewis, hoping to halt Lewis's advance into the Ohio Valley. After a long and furious battle, Cornstalk retreated. After the battle, the Virginians, along with a second force led by Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia, marched into the Ohio Valley and compelled Cornstalk to agree to a treaty, ending the war. (Wiki) Landon Covington Bell (1880-1960) was a lawyer and author who compiled/published vital records for several Virginia counties in the early 1900s (many of which are frequently cited in genealogical records for ancestors from "Southside" Virginia) He was industry advisor to the US Commerce Dept. under Sec. Hoover; and, he was an organizer of the Southern Coal Producers Assoc. He was a noted author of history and genealogy.; 16 pages

A Journey My Political Life (Author Signed), Blair, Tony
3 Blair, Tony A Journey My Political Life (Author Signed)
Knopf 2010 0307269833 / 9780307269836 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket Signed by Author
Signed bookplate on endpaper. Stated first edition. Contents look new with many photos. Dust Jacket (not price clipped) is now in Mylar Protective Cover. The longest-serving Labour prime minister of Britain, and still a figure on the international political stage, Blair recalls in detail the events of his premiership. He covers lots of actions and activities and shares with forthrightness his thinking on world and domestic issues he had to confront; on the other hand, on occasion he does play his cards close to the vest, avoiding a complete “spilling” of his thoughts about a certain situation he had then and now. Blair’s view of the late Princess Diana is discerning; of his successor, Gordon Brown, hardly affectionate; of George Bush (the younger), certainly controversial. Consciousness of his public image was never far from how he acted in office and now how he writes about his actions. Behind the scenes in the halls of power is always an interesting place to go, and Blair takes us there with delight on his part and on our part, from weekending with the royal family in Scotland to the nerve-racking “Prime Minister’s Questions,” when the PM must face inquiries (read “criticism”) from the opposition MPs. Rare. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book.; Photographs; 9.40 X 6.70 X 1.70 inches; 700 pages; Signed by Author

What will he do with it?, Caxton, Pisistratus, Sir E. Bulwer Lytton Bart
6 Caxton, Pisistratus, Sir E. Bulwer Lytton Bart What will he do with it?
New York, NY Harper & Brothers, Publishers 1861 Later Printing; First Edition Hardcover Fair with No dust jacket as issued
Leather binding has wear at edges and corners with chips to top and bottom of spine. Contents show browning to pages due to age. Contains books 1-12 which seems to be the total book in one volume. Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton PC, was an English novelist, poet, playwright, and politician. Born: May 25, 1803, London, United Kingdom. Lytton was a florid, popular writer of his day, who coined such phrases as "the great unwashed", "pursuit of the almighty dollar", "the pen is mightier than the sword", and the infamous incipit "It was a dark and stormy night."He was the youngest son of General William Earle Bulwer of Heydon Hall and Wood Dalling, Norfolk and Elizabeth Barbara Lytton, daughter of Richard Warburton Lytton of Knebworth, Hertfordshire. He had two brothers, William Earle Lytton Bulwer (1799–1877) and Henry, afterwards Lord Dalling and Bulwer. Lord Lytton's original surname was Bulwer, the names 'Earle' and 'Lytton' were middle names. On 20 February 1844 he assumed the name and arms of Lytton by royal licence and his surname then became 'Bulwer-Lytton'. His widowed mother had done the same in 1811. His brothers were always simply surnamed 'Bulwer'. Died: January 18, 1873, Torquay, United KingdomAwards: Chancellor's Gold Medal. .....The opening chapters really compel one into reading on and on when Bulwer-Lytton unfolds the story of the angelic little Sophy and her grandfather, who is known as Gentleman Waife and who is forced to earn his living as an actor and to make his grandchild, too, appear on the stage amidst a group of itinerant actors under the guidance of the tyrannic Lorenzo Rugge. The yarn itself is brilliant and compelling, and the main motif is the difference between a man who sacrificed everything in order to keep his family’s good name unsullied and another who sacrificed his own name in order to give somebody he loves another chance. First was published in 1859 so this may be a second? ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 311 pages

7 Doddridge, Philip The life of the Hon. Col. J. Gardiner, Who was slain at the battle of Preston Pans, September 21, 1745. With an appendix relating to the ancient family of the Monroes, of Fowlis
Leeds Davies 1815 First Edition; First Impression Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Written by the author to David Gardner, Esq. who was a cornet in Sir John Cope's regiment of Dragoons and the son of the late Col. Gardnier. This battle is not a battle honour for British Regiments. The regiments present at the battle were: Gardiner’s (13th) and Hamilton’s (14th) Dragoons, Guise’s (6th), Lee’s (44th), Murray’s (46th) and Lascelles (47th) Foot. The Col was killed at Prestonpans southeast of Edinburg in Scotland during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. The Royal Army took a horrific beating by the Scottish. Much of this account speaks of Gardners family history and his conversion to Christianity. Account has been rebound in beautiful marble cover with gold and black label. Original text with uneven cut pages and yellowing due to age. Also contains an Elegy on the death of Col. Gardiner by Rev. Mr. Thomas Gibbons. Pags 139-141 have the top right corner torn out with a very small amount of text missing, otherwise complete. Rare. ; 161 pages
