Dorrance Pub Co 2002 0805954171 / 9780805954173 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Near Fine with no dust jacket
Signed by both authors. The extraordinary life of Captain Charles N. Bamforth spanned most of the twentieth century, beginning with his childhood at the turn of the century and continuing through his retirement and death during the Cold War era. During his sixty years at sea, Captain Bamforth experienced the Depression, two World Wars, and a number of troublesome labor disputes. Through it all, he also had to navigate loneliness, confusion, and marriage to both his family and the sea. His story is told in meticulous detail and with refreshing honesty. Captain Bamforths handwritten diaries, logs, and personal letters all have been carefully compiled by his sons, Charles and Richard, and reveal as much about the hard-working, unassuming courage of the captain as they do about the turbulent times during which he lived. Rare. ; 1.2 x 8.8 x 6 Inches; 436 pages; p; Signed by All Authors

TATYANA TOLSTAYA the Russian novelist had this to say about Gorbachev " By gently pushing open the gates of reform, he unleashed a democratic flood that deluged the Soviet universe and washed away the cold war..... No single approach and there have been many can explain Gorbachev. Perhaps the holy fools with their metaphysical scenario were right when they whispered that he was marked and that seven years were given to him to transform Russia in the name of her as yet invisible but inevitable salvation and renaissance." Gorbachev met his wife, Raisa Titarenko, daughter of a Ukrainian railway engineer, at Moscow State University. They married in September 1953 and moved to Stavropol upon graduation. She gave birth to their only child, daughter Irina Mikhailovna Virganskaya, in 1957. Raisa Gorbacheva died of leukemia in 1999. Gorbachev has two granddaughters (Ksenia and Anastasia) and one great granddaughter (Aleksandra). Foward by Martin McCauley. Dust jacket now in Brodart mylar protective (clear) cover. It is in as new condition and is kept in a handmade custom box. Forward by Martin McCauley.Russians feel that credit should be given to Gorbachev and not Regan for the distruction of the the "Berlin Wall". Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev born 2 March 1931) was the seventh and last General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, serving from 1985 until 1991, and the last head of state of the USSR, serving from 1988 until its collapse in 1991. He was the only Soviet leader to have been born after the October Revolution of 1917. Gorbachev was born in Stavropol Krai into a peasant family, and in his teens operated combine harvesters on collective farms. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1955 with a degree in law. While at university, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and soon became very active within it. In 1970, he was appointed the First Party Secretary of the Stavropol Kraikom, First Secretary to the Supreme Soviet in 1974, and appointed a member of the Politburo in 1979. Gorbachev was elected General Secretary by the Politburo in 1985. Gorbachev's attempts at reform as well as summit conferences with United States President Ronald Reagan and his reorientation of Soviet strategic aims contributed to the end of the Cold War, ended the political supremacy of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. His wife Raisa Titarenko died in 1999 of leukemia. As of 2017 Mr. Gorbachev is 86 years old. Dust jacket now in Brodart mylar protective (clear) cover. 16 Lucas, Jack & D. K. Drum Indestructible The Unforgettable Story of a Marine Hero at the Battle of Iwo Jima
Da Capo Press 2006 0306814706 / 9780306814709 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Looks new. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. A riveting combat memoir of an Iwo Jima hero-the youngest Marine in history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor Here is an eloquent, plainspoken combat memoir of a young soldier who belongs in a class with World War II combat hero Audie Murphy. At the height of the Battle of Iwo Jima, Jack Lucas and three other Marines attacked a Japanese pillbox. When two enemy grenades landed in their midst, Private Lucas jumped on both grenades, just as they were exploding. His buddies were saved, but Lucas was torn apart. Miraculously, he survived-but just barely. For this brave action seventeen year- old Jack Lucas from North Carolina became the youngest soldier in the twentieth century, and the youngest Marine in history to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. In Indestructible , we learn of the rocky road that led Jack Lucas to Iwo Jima-from his lying about his age to join the Marines to his going AWOL in order to join the action in the Pacific-and his arduous, frightening recovery following his heroic sacrifice. Today, wherever Jack Lucas speaks crowds gather to honor him and pay tribute to Marine heritage and pride as well as to pay their respects to one of America's greatest generations.; 1 x 8.3 x 5.8 Inches; 240 pages
