Timothy Senier, The life of Dr. Samuel Finley late President of New Jersey College. Among English Puritans, the most common and the most feared of Satan's temptations was the temptation to despair, the loss of hope in one's own salvation. Perhaps the most widely-known example of despair in the sixteenth and seventeenth century was the case of an Italian lawyer Francis Spira. In 1548, Spira converted to Lutheranism and began to spread the Lutheran message to others. Under pressure from the Catholic Church, however, he renounced his Protestant faith. He then became convinced that he was a reprobate, destined for hell. The story of Spira spread throughout Europe, surfacing in sermons and treatises dealing with despair. In England, an account of Spira's case by a first-hand witness, Matteo Gribalde, appeared in 1550. The most influential English account of Spira, however, was written by Nathaniel Bacon in 1638. Bacon's Fearefull Estate of Francis Spira, based on the original Latin records, became an instant best-seller and was reissued ten times in England and eight times in the American colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. For anti-Puritans, Spira's case exemplified the dangers of the Calvinist teachings of predestination and human corruption. Puritans, however, empathized with Spira, seeing Spira's condition as simply an extreme example of the experience of all godly Christians. Rare works. ; 12mo 7" - 7˝" tall; 80 pages

Analysis of Butler's Analogy, Crooks, George Richard
11 Crooks, George Richard Analysis of Butler's Analogy
ca 1950 First Edition; Various Paperback Good with no dust jacket
Ink stain at top of pages which does not affect print. Foxing. An early imprint or book section (no binding), printed around 1850-1870, of a discussion of Bishop Butlers discussion of life, death, and life after death. Joseph Butler (1692-1752) wrote his infamous Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, to the Constitution and Course of Nature, in 1736. Butler was born and educated in England as a Presbyterian but became ordained in the Church of England in 1718, and eventually became the Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral and later Bishop of Durham. This is not Hobarts and the author is not revealed, but is most likely George Richard Crooks who republished Butler's Analogy with and Analysis which this paper is mostly that analysis. George Richard Crooks (February 3, 1822 Philadelphia – February 20, 1897) was a United States writer, educator, and Methodist minister. In 1860 Crooks became editor of The Methodist, a publication described by a colleague as "the doughty unofficial rival of the official weekly – The Christian Advocate."[12] In conjunction with John McClintock, he prepared a series of "First Books" in Latin and Greek (1846–1847). In 1852 Crooks edited a republication of Butler's Analogy, for which he added an analysis, index, and biography. (Wikipedia). Heavy foxing to pages and ink spot to top of pages. Rare. Possibly no publication date in item. Paperback may indicate a booklet, phamplet, tract or book.; 12mo 7" - 7˝" tall; 49 pages

Anti-Paraclete, Godbey, W.B.
18 Godbey, W.B. Anti-Paraclete
Cincinnati, OH God's Revivalist Press ca 1900 1st Thus; First Impression Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
Blue booklet. Rare imprint. This booklet is protected by an archival quality sleeve to maintain present condition. William B. Godbey was one of the most influential evangelists of the Wesleyan-holiness movement in its formative period (1880-1920). Thousands of people experienced conversion or entire sanctification under his ministry, and Godbey gained a reputation for having revivals everywhere he went. A prolific author, he dictated over 230 books and pamphlets and wrote numerous articles for holiness periodicals. He produced a new translation of the New Testament in 1901, and published a seven-volume Commentary on the New Testament (1896-1900). Godbey’s publications, along with his preaching and “Bible lessons” at camp meetings, earned for the evangelist a widespread reputation among “holiness people” as the “Greek scholar” and “Bible commentator.” Relentlessly on the move, Godbey traveled extensively across the continental United States and circled the globe five times. He was widely reputed to be the holiness movement’s expert on “Bible lands” and “Bible manners and customs.” Through his publications and sermons, Godbey joined a limited number of other ministers who introduced premillennialism into the holiness movement. Godbey was also one of the principal agents responsible for keeping the “tongues movement” out of the rest of the holiness movement. Rare. Possibly no publication date in item. Paperback may indicate a booklet, phamplet, tract or book.; 12mo 7" - 7˝" tall; 32 pages
