Signed by author in February 2011 at gun show in Louisville, KY and seller witnessed the signing. Beautiful scarce collectors grade copy of this book. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. An unvarnished and moving memoir of a Marine veteran who fought his way across the Pacific Theater of World War II-whose story is featured in the upcoming HBO(r) series The Pacific This is an eyewitness-and eye-opening-account of some of the most savage and brutal fighting in the war against Japan, told from the perspective of a young Texan who volunteered for the Marine Corps to escape a life as a traveling salesman. R.V. Burgin enlisted at the age of twenty, and with his sharp intelligence and earnest work ethic, climbed the ranks from a green private to a seasoned sergeant. Along the way, he shouldered a rifle as a member of a mortar squad. He saw friends die-and enemies killed. He saw scenes he wanted to forget but never did-from enemy snipers who tied themselves to branches in the highest trees, to ambushes along narrow jungle trails, to the abandoned corpses of hara kiri victims, to the final howling banzai attacks as the Japanese embraced their inevitable defeat. An unforgettable narrative of a young Marine in combat, Islands of the Damned brings to life the hell that was the Pacific War. Rare. ; HBO The Pacific; Photographs; 1.2 x 9.1 x 6.3 Inches; 304 pages; Signed by Author

Jeane Dixon My Life and Prophecies, Dixon, Jeane & Rene Noorbergen
6 Dixon, Jeane & Rene Noorbergen Jeane Dixon My Life and Prophecies
William Morrow 1969 0688021425 / 9780688021429 First Edition; Various Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket Signed by Author
White and blue cover, no dust or slipcase. Signed, "Blessings, Jean Dixon". Book is in Excellent Condition. Jean Dixon was one of the best-known American astrologers and psychics of the 20th century, due to her syndicated newspaper astrology column, and some well-publicized predictions and a best-selling biography. She is best known for allegedly predicting the assassination of President John F. Kennedy four years before he was elected. In the May 13, 1956, issue of Parade Magazine she wrote that the 1960 presidential election would be "dominated by labor and won by a Democrat" who would then go on to "be assassinated or die in office though not necessarily in his first term." Five years later Jeane Dixon was addressing a meeting in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles when questioned if Robert Kennedy would ever become President. 'No,' she had answered. 'He will never become President of the United States because of a tragedy right here in this hotel.' A week later Robert Kennedy did win the California Democratic primary and he had just finished addressing a victory rally at the Ambassador Hotel's ballroom when he was shot. He died the following day. Also in January 1942 Dixon had warned the Hollywood film actress Carole Lombard (married to Clark Gable at the time) that it would be dangerous for her to travel by plane within the next six weeks. Lombard, scheduled to appear at a War Bond rally did not heed Dixon's warning, she died in an airplane crash within three days of the warning. President Richard Nixon referred to Jean Dixon as "the soothsayer" and ordered preparations for a terrorist attack that Dixon had predicted, of course the prediction did not come true during Nixon's term. She was also one of several astrologers who gave advice to Nancy Reagan during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. She died of cardiac arrest in Washington, D.C. on January 25, 1997, at the age of 93. 14 Lurting, Thomas The Fighting Sailor turned Peaceable Chirstian: manifested in the Convincement and Conversion of Thomas Lurting with a short relation of many great dangers, and wonderful deliverances, he met
Leeds, England Davies and Booth 1816 Later Printing; First Impression Ephemera Very Good with no dust jacket
Uneven cut paper has been rebound using beautiful marbled paper boards, gold on black title, Parchment end papers with buffered and restored text block. Very handsome presentation of the 1816 printing. There is foxing to the original pages. The recent pirate activities on the horn of Africa have sparked interest in a phenomenon which in the years of yore characterised the high seas i.e. hostage taking. Combating this ill is the primary objective of the present treatise. Through his autobiographical narrative, The Fighting Sailor Turn'd Peaceable Christian, Thomas Lurting (1632-1713) distinguishes himself as one of the emblematic defendants of the early Quaker ideals for International Peace. In this treatise Lurting takes the fight for these ideals to the maritime scene. Most of the narrative takes place on board the Bristol Frigot, ship on board of which he was convinced. Despite staunch opposition facing the rise of Quakerism in the maritime milieu, which at the time was characterised by the spirit of belligerence, the determination of Quakers to die for their convictions, their pacific resistance ended up appealing to many a seaman who became convinced also. Numerous warring and fighting scenes constitute the ingredients for Lurting's plot development. And most especially the " ... True Account of George Pattison's Being Taken by the Turks; and How Redeemed by ..., Without Bloodshed, Putting the Turks on Shoar in their Own Country ..." Lurting makes of this episode the turning point around which he articulates his spiritual journey to illustrate the very Quaker ideal for an everlasting universal brotherhood and pacifism. Thomas Lurting was born in 1632, probably in Ireland. But he spent his childhood in London where at the age of fourteen he was impressed and forcefully taken to war in Ireland where he spent roughly two years. Upon his return to London, he was turned over into the Bristol Frigot, one of the war vessels belonging to Admiral Blake's fleet. On board this same ship he became convinced of the evils of war and decided to quit warring for the merchant service. He was however impressed many a times into the navy. He published his spiritual autobiography, The Fighting Sailor Turn'd Peaceable Christian. in 1710. Three years later, he passed away on the 30th March 1713, at the age of 81 in London and was laid to rest at Burmondsey. Rare; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd 2005 0007193130 / 9780007193134 First Edition; 1st Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket Signed by Author
Signed by Author on Title Page. Dust Jacket now in Mylar Protective Cover. The debut thriller from a bright new Scottish talent set to rival Ian Rankin. It's DS Logan McRae's first day back on the job after a year off on the sick, and it couldn't get much worse. Four-year-old David Reid's body is discovered in a ditch, strangled, mutilated and a long time dead. There's a killer stalking the Granite City and the local media are baying for blood. If that wasn't enough, Logan also has to contend with a new boss, DI Insch, who doesn't suffer fools gladly and thinks everyone's a fool, and his own ex-girlfriend, the beautiful but chilly Isobel MacAlister, who also happens to be the chief pathologist. The only good news is WPC 'Ball Breaker' Watson, Logan's new guardian angel. The dead are piling up in the morgue almost as fast as the snow on the streets, and Logan knows time is running out. More children are going missing. More are going to die. If Logan isn't careful, he's going to end up joining them. Set in Aberdeen, where the rainy season lasts all year, criminal gangs vie for supremacy on the streets and the oil industry brings an influx of wealth and vice, this is a gritty, powerful and page-turning debut thriller by a writer with a wonderfully observant eye and a characteristically Scottish sense of gallows humour. Beautiful rare or scarce book in clean, bright, and sharp collector's condition. ; 1.65 x 9.13 x 6.22 Inches; 464 pages; Signed by Author

The Civil War in the United States, Marx, Karl , Frederick Engels
17 Marx, Karl , Frederick Engels The Civil War in the United States
New York International Publishers 1937 First Edition; Second Printing Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
Copyright is 1937 but back of title also says second printing 1940. Red cover with paper label on front for title printed in red. Corners show wear and soiling to cover. Two reviewers state "Marx' sidekick Friedrich Engels was an authority on military matters.Civil war enthusiasts should read this book." and " This is a fascinating collection of newspaper pieces and correspondence showing how Marx supported Lincoln and formed a one man cheering section for the North's conduct of the war. He acts as war correspondence for The New York Tribune and die Presse of Vienna. He praises, he blames, he shows frustration of the North's ineptitude, but throughout he firmly supports Lincoln's conduct of the war and views it as a gigantic "class struggle" --perhaps the first big class struggle. The letters and articles range widely and some concern issues that are nearly forgotten, but the big issues are discussed there in an informed and urbane manner." ; Marxist Library Volume XXX; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 325 pages
