4 Adamic, Louis, et. al. The Truth About Aimee Semple McPherson A Symposium
Girard, KS Haldeman-Julius Company 1926 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Very Good with No dust jacket as issued
Paperback booklet has tan cover black print. Former owners name in front. Cover shows soiling, contents clean. Paper yellowing due to age. Published articles by author and Edward Campbell, Mike Schindler, and Robert Mason exposing Aimee as a fraud. " Aimee Semple McPherson (October 9, 1890 – September 27, 1944), also known as Sister Aimee, was a Canadian-American Los Angeles–based evangelist and media celebrity in the 1920s and 1930s. She founded the Foursquare Church. McPherson has been noted as a pioneer in the use of modern media, especially radio, and was the second woman to be granted a broadcast license. She used radio to draw on the growing appeal of popular entertainment in North America and incorporated other forms into her weekly sermons at Angelus Temple. In her time she was the most publicized Christian evangelist, surpassing Billy Sunday and her other predecessors. She conducted public faith-healing demonstrations before large crowds; testimonies conveyed tens of thousands of people healed. McPherson's articulation of the United States as a nation founded and sustained by divine inspiration continues to be echoed by many pastors in churches today. News coverage sensationalized misfortunes with family and church members; particularly inflaming accusations she had fabricated her reported kidnapping, turning it into a national spectacle McPherson's preaching style, extensive charity work and ecumenical contributions were a major influence in revitalization of American Evangelical Christianity in the 20th century."(Wikipedia) Rare work. Official Inaugural Program Honoring Governor George C. Wallace, January 14, 1963, Alabama
5 Alabama Official Inaugural Program Honoring Governor George C. Wallace, January 14, 1963
Montgomery, AL Inaugural Committee 1963 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Very Good with No dust jacket as issued
Blue and white cover with photo of George C. Wallace. George Corley Wallace, Jr. (August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998) was an American politician and the 45th Governor of Alabama, having served two nonconsecutive terms and two consecutive terms as a Democrat: 1963–1967, 1971–1979 and 1983–1987. Wallace has the third longest gubernatorial tenure in post-Constitutional U.S. history at 5,848 days. After four runs for U.S. President (three as a Democrat and one on the American Independent Party ticket), he earned the title "the most influential loser" in 20th century U.S. politics, according to biographers Dan T. Carter and Stephan Lesher.A 1972 assassination attempt left Wallace paralyzed, and he used a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. He is remembered for his Southern populist and segregationist attitudes during the mid-20th century period of the African-American civil rights movement and activism, which gained passage of federal civil rights legislation in the mid-1960s to enforce constitutional rights for all citizens. He eventually renounced segregationism but remained a populist.(Wikipedia); Photographs, Illustrations

A Moral Military, Axinn, Sidney
7 Axinn, Sidney A Moral Military
Temple University Press 1990 0877227802 / 9780877227809 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket
; 0.75 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 230 pages; Should a good soldier ever disobey a direct military order? Are there restrictions on how we fight a war? What is meant by 'military honor', and does it really affect the contemporary soldier? Is human dignity possible under battlefield conditions? Sidney Axinn considers these basic ethical questions within the context of the laws of warfare and answers 'yes' to each of these questions. In this study of the conduct of war, he examines actions that are honorable or dishonorable and provides the first full-length treatment of the military conventions from a philosophical point of view. Axinn gives a philosophical analysis of the 'Laws of Warfare' as found in the Hague and Geneva Conventions, which have been agreed to by almost every nation in the world. The aims of his study are to establish a basic twentieth-century framework for moral military action and to assist military personnel in analyzing their won professional ethic.Stating that moral reasoning is required by people in military uniform in a wide variety of situations, the author examines the question of the limits of military obedience. Axinn argues for the seriousness of the concept of military honor but limits honorable military activity by a strict interpretation of the notion of war crime. Major chapters deal with military honor, prisoners of war, spying, war crimes, the dirty-hands theory of command, nuclear weapons, terrorism, and covert operations. This philosophical study of the line between honorable and dishonorable military action cautions that in compliance with the war conventions professional military personnel and knowledgeable civilians must not lose their moral nerve nor abandon honor to satisfy immoral political requests. Author note: Sidney Axinn is Professor of Philosophy at Temple University.

8 B.H. A Relation of the Fearful Estate of Francis Spira, after he turned apostate from the protestant faith to popery. Together with the miserable and woful death of several others, wh have been enemies to the Gospel of Christ
London Davies and Booth 1816 First Edition; Various Ephemera Very Good with no dust jacket

Also the fearful estate and miserable end of John Chill, The Emperor Julian, Henry of Bullen, Henry the Fourth, The late famous French General Marshal Turenne, Latamus, Bishop Gardiner. Other additions to this book include: A Sketch of the Character of the late John Howard, A Short account of the life of The Rev. Timothy Senier, The life of Dr. Samuel Finley late President of New Jersey College. Among English Puritans, the most common and the most feared of Satan's temptations was the temptation to despair, the loss of hope in one's own salvation. Perhaps the most widely-known example of despair in the sixteenth and seventeenth century was the case of an Italian lawyer Francis Spira. In 1548, Spira converted to Lutheranism and began to spread the Lutheran message to others. Under pressure from the Catholic Church, however, he renounced his Protestant faith. He then became convinced that he was a reprobate, destined for hell. The story of Spira spread throughout Europe, surfacing in sermons and treatises dealing with despair. In England, an account of Spira's case by a first-hand witness, Matteo Gribalde, appeared in 1550. The most influential English account of Spira, however, was written by Nathaniel Bacon in 1638. Bacon's Fearefull Estate of Francis Spira, based on the original Latin records, became an instant best-seller and was reissued ten times in England and eight times in the American colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. For anti-Puritans, Spira's case exemplified the dangers of the Calvinist teachings of predestination and human corruption. Puritans, however, empathized with Spira, seeing Spira's condition as simply an extreme example of the experience of all godly Christians. Rare works. ; 12mo 7" - 7˝" tall; 80 pages

Signed by both authors. The extraordinary life of Captain Charles N. Bamforth spanned most of the twentieth century, beginning with his childhood at the turn of the century and continuing through his retirement and death during the Cold War era. During his sixty years at sea, Captain Bamforth experienced the Depression, two World Wars, and a number of troublesome labor disputes. Through it all, he also had to navigate loneliness, confusion, and marriage to both his family and the sea. His story is told in meticulous detail and with refreshing honesty. Captain Bamforths handwritten diaries, logs, and personal letters all have been carefully compiled by his sons, Charles and Richard, and reveal as much about the hard-working, unassuming courage of the captain as they do about the turbulent times during which he lived. 12 Barclay, Robert A treatise on church government, Formerly called Anarchy of the Ranters, &c., being a two-fold apology for the church and people of God, called in ... good order and discipline in the church
Philadelphia PA S. W. Conrad 1822 Later Printing; First Edition Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
The original 1822 edition. Leather cover worn but contents tight and complete. Some foxing to pages. "Being a two-fold apology for the church and people of God called, in derision, Quakers. To which is added and epistle to the National meeting of Friends in Dublin concerning good order and discipline in the church" Very Rare. We provide delivery tracking on US orders. Robert Barclay (23 December 1648 – 3 October 1690) was a Scottish Quaker, one of the most eminent writers belonging to the Religious Society of Friends and a member of the Clan Barclay. He was also governor of the East Jersey colony in North America through most of the 1680s, although he himself never resided in the colony. The Ranters were one of a number of nonconformist dissenting groups that emerged around the time of the English Commonwealth (1649–1660). They were largely common people, and there is plenty of evidence that the movement was widespread throughout England, though they were not organised and had no leader.[Wikipedia]Ranters were regarded as heretical by the established Church and seem to have been regarded by the government as a threat to social order. They denied the authority of churches, of scripture, of the current ministry and of services, instead calling on men to listen to the divine within them. In many ways they resemble the 14th century Brethren of the Free Spirit. Rare.; 12mo 7" - 7˝" tall; 124 pages

Remarks on the Slavery Question In a Letter to Jonathan Phillips, Esq., Channing, William E.
19 Channing, William E. Remarks on the Slavery Question In a Letter to Jonathan Phillips, Esq.
Boston, MA James Munroe and Co. 1839 First Edition; First Impression Paperback Good with No dust jacket as issued
Brown paper cover with handwritten title. Endpaper missing thus book starts with Title page. Yellowing and some foxing to pages due to age. This is the original 1839 printing and not a reprint or digital printing. This book is culturally important as it discloses the slavery question early in the century and may be considered as one of the primary source publications on the subject of African American's and slavery. It was written by William Ellery Channing (April 7, 1780 – October 2, 1842) was the foremost Unitarian preacher in the United States in the early nineteenth century and along with Andrews Norton, (1786-1853), one of Unitarianism's leading theologians. He was known for his articulate and impassioned sermons and public speeches, and as a prominent thinker in the liberal theology of the day. Channing's religion and thought were among the chief influences on the New England Transcendentalists, though he never countenanced their views, which he saw as extreme. The beliefs he espoused, especially within his "Baltimore Sermon[1]" of May 5, 1819, at the ordination of a future famous theologian and educator in his own right, Jared Sparks, (1789-1866), as the first minister (1819-1823) of the newly organized (1817) "First Independent Church of Baltimore" (later the "First Unitarian Church of Baltimore (Unitarian and Universalist)"). Here he espoused his principles and tenets of the developing philosophy and theology of "Unitarianism" resulted in the organization later in 1825 of the first Unitarian denomination in America (American Unitarian Association) and the later developments and mergers between Unitarians and Universalists resulting finally in the Unitarian Universalist Association of America in 1961. Channing was writing in response to Henry Clay's speech on slavery. Now you can own an original 1839 printing of this famous work. Scarce.
